SharePoint List - date or text
Hi, I am new to this forum and SharePoint. I am looking to create a column in a SharePoint List that offers the usera choice of selecting a date or a choice of three text values. To put this in context, users are requested to state deadline date or any of three defined reasons why deadline date is not defined, i.e. "project on hold".I'm guessing the functionality is there, and that I'm a little lost from al the options in SharePoint.thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Hi there, As in Excel, Access and a host of other apps there is no way of having a field that can hold two types of values - i.e. a Date value and a Text value, and then later on giving the user the capability of sorting on the date entered, or a text value in the same field. Two columns are needed I think. I would create a column in the list called Deadline Date , set as a Date column type, set that to optional for example, and then create another column called Deadline Date not Met Reason, set as a Choice field, and then placing the choice options in there, ensuring that there is an option called Deadline Date Met and setting this field to required . Thats means you will be able to filter on the Deadline Date and/Or the Text field with the relevant choices in them - and additionally ensure that the user has chosen something to indicate that the Deadlne Date has been met and it not why not. Hope this helps Cheers Geoff
