SharePoint Foundation 2010 Extranet Licensing
We are using SharePoint Foundation 2010 as intranet. Now we want to use same server and use another Web Application for extranet. There will be 20-40 extranet users login for extranet only.

My question is: What licenses is needed for this sort of solution? Could someone from Microsoft answer for this question so we would do this the right.

Hi,

SharePoint Foundation is a free product. You don't need licenses for it.

Hi,

Yes it isn't a problem. You can safely without any expenses share information with extranet users.

I asked this same question from Microsoft license vendor and he said that if we want to build extranet site for authenticated users we need SharePoint Server 2010 for Internet Sites Standard OLP NL or SharePoint Server 2010 for Internet Sites Enterprice OLP NL. And my case is not possible to do with SharePoint Foundation 2010. I need standard or Enterprise version of SharePoint Server 2010.

I'm confused here. Which solution is correct??

Hi Matias,

When it comes to SharePoint Foundation the only thing you'll be needing is Windows Server licensing. There is no need for licenses regarding extranet users.

You only need to additionally license the "Windows" External Connector.

Hi Matias,

Your question is a very good point, so the answer of your question is as folloing:-

SharePoint 2010 Server has two license types

1- First one for Internet sites, which is used to build website for anonymous users by SharePoint.

2- The Second type is for Intranet/Extranet and the issue of that license is Microsoft does not care about what you need to do, either Intranet or Extranet   so you need to buy just one SharePoint 2010 server license to create both of Intranet and Extranet.

Note : To allow users to access your Extranet you just need to configure your Intranet to act as an Extranet.

Thanks & Best regards,

A. Hussein

What if we want to validate those extranet users against our Active Directory?  Do we need AD licensing?
