SharePoint Central Administration shortcut launches in Firefox - IE is default browser
This is a bit of a strange one. I've got a MOSS development Hyper-V virtual machinerunning MOSS 2007 April 2009 Cumulative Update. It's a stand-alone machine in a workgroup. As of April CU installation, Central Administration was launching in IE8. After installing a number of developer and client tools we identified that Central Administration was launching in Firefox. We initially thought that Firefox was the default browser, but it isn't and I don't believe it ever was. I've confirmed that no other Start menu shortcuts to web pages launch in Firefox - only Central Admin. Unfortunately I can't find much informtion about the PSCONFIGUI -cmd showcentraladmin shortcut, as PSCONFIGUI -help doesn't display any switches, it just launches the installer. Here's some of the other troubleshooting I've done: Entering the Central Admin URL in RUN launches in IE Changing the Central Adminport and rebootinghad no effect Nothing in the WSS registry settings refers to Firefoxas farI can tell, although there are some long IDs that I can't immediately identify. Ultimately I don't want to touch the registry without a full understanding of the implications Any ideas? I'm not seeing any documentation on PSCONFIGUI anywhere, so I'm not sure what it's doing. Given that no changes have been made to SharePoint since Firefox was installed, I'm struggling to understand how this could happen. Ultimately I can roll back and reinstall the browsers and developer tools but I'd like to know how this can happen in case we encounter it again.

Mike, Sorry, I misunderstand the purpose of marking answers as such. Can you help clarify the purpose of marking answers? I thought it was so readers would know that the question was answered correctly. Thanks, Tom

It's up to the original poster to say that a reply has answered his question. Original posters sometimes don't bother so the propose as answer system is included so that people can draw the Moderator's attention to a good answer. Unfortunately people proposing their own answers usually have a lower quality requirement before doing so than people proposing the posts of other people. Thus a lot of my time in checking "proposed as answer" posts is wasted. Hence my standard "unpropose" of any such self-proposed post and the request to propose only the good answers of other people. [As a very general rule, most non-Microsoft Moderators want to do away with the possibility that people can propose their own posts and have requested it many times in the appropriate forum software forum. Some Microsoft support teams - but not to their credit the SP support team - like the ability to self-propose because it gives them the opportunity to mark the post as an answer and thus improve their forum statistics. This is possibly the reason why the forum software team still haven't blocked the possibility in the forum software. The non-Microsoft Moderators are interested in having good answers marked as such and use the propose system in order to come as close as possible to it.] If someone else (of known ability) now proposes your post as an answer it will then be upgraded to answer status. Thanks for explaining your reasoning, Mike. I do see the potential for abuse. I'm happy to wait for someone who can confirm the answer. I want the best quality for this forum, too.

I found a good step-by-step workaround: http://developer.spikesource.com/wiki/index.php/Sharepoint_Central_Administration_keeps_using_firefox
