SharePoint 2013 SP1 Update Shudown Services?

Hello,

So I inherited a SharePoint 2013 farm wih 3 WFE, 1 App, 1 Index servers. This farm hasn't been patched or updated since it was setup 3 years ago. This weekend I'm planing to install SharePoint SP1 as a start of many patches. I would like to kill all SharePoint request and database activity while I'm going a database backup and installing the binaries.

I was thinking of shutting down the following services on the servers, but restart them once the binary instalation is done and before I run the Configuration Wizard.

  • SharePoint 2013 Administration (SPAdminV4)
  • SharePoint 2013 Timer (SPTimerV4)
  • SharePoint 2013 Tracing (SPTraceV4)
  • SharePoint 2013 User Code Host (SPUserCodeV4)
  • SharePoint 2013 VSS Writer (SPWriterV4)
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC)
  • SharePoint Server Search (OSearch15)

Am i on the right track? Is there a better way to shutdown sharepoint? are there dangers of doing so? or should I just run the backup while sharepoint and search up and running?

Thanks

Note: Sharepoint downtime is not an issue, users where warned well ahead of time that sharepoint will not be avail this weekend.

You don't need to shutdown services for backup purposes.

For patching purposes, typically you'll want to shutdown:

O15Search

SPSearchHostController

SPTimerV4

IIS Admin

There's a good article here:

I've also created cmdlets that help with this process, available from http://sharepointupdates.com.

Hani,As Trevor said...Not required to stop all the share point services.I would suggest to stop the services related to search and Timer services only.If you run the patch by the  script provided in below will stop and start the services automatically. The script donet required any modifications,as the only thing is the script and the binaries will be in same location only.
