SharePoint 2013 Internet Facing Website - Topology queries

Hi, I need some help please on the options available for hosting a public facing website on SharePoint 2013. I am aware of the options in 2010 for having an internal farm and using content deployment to publish content out to a separate farm in the DMZ. We wont be authenticating any users on the website (all anonymous access)

1) Is this still the preferred approach for SP2013?

2) Content deployment seems to be replaced by XSP - can you using cross site publishing from staging farm to production (DMZ) farm?

3) What other options do we have for publishing to the www without using DMZ farm? Can we just publish an individual website out to the web? How do we secure the rest of the farm in this way? I don't think web and collaboration content in the same farm is recommended.

4) How do you actually point a public domain like www.mydomain.com to my SharePoint farm? Is it a matter of pointing my DNS nameservers in my domain control panel to the SharePoint server? How does this work for load balancing?

5) What types of device would allow for load balancing the WFE servers in DMZ, and can these devices be set up to allow anonymous access?

Thanks :)

Hi,

#1. Content deployment is best-suited only for scenarios in which you have a business, regulatory, or legal requirement that a separate farm must host content until it is supposed to be published, so in that case you can consider content deployment.

#2. You can use cross-site publishing to publish the site from staging farm to production(DMZ) farm.

#3. You can configure the Alternate Access Mapping(AAM) for your staging farm and make the sites available from the internet.

However, if you want to only publish an individual website to the internet and secure the rest of the farm, I recommend to use cross-site publishing feature to achieve this goal.

#4. To make the public domain name pointing to your site, then you need to make that public DNS pointing to the IP address of your SharePoint server.

And it will not affect the load balancing configuration.

#5. If you want to configure load balancing in the DMZ farm, I recommend to use the cross-site publishing and you can enable anonymous access in the farm because the content in the target site cannot be changed in the DMZ farm.
