SharePoint 2010 content size issue

We have an huge SharePoint farm with 310 content databases for a single web application and total number of site collections are 9000. The design was done long time ago and dont have any details how it was designed. Now the farm is already crossed the content database limit recommended by Microsoft(300 DBs).

I am planing to fine tune the entire farm before we get in to huge performance issue.  As an action I want to archive the data that are older than 2 years and delete un-used site permanently.

Please suggest me if there is any other possible solution to fine tune our farm or let me know how efficiently the contents can be archived.

thanks in advance,

K Senthi

You could merge smaller Site Collections into other databases. Or migrate unused Site Collections into a single Content Database, make the Site Collections (or db) read-only, to reduce the farm impact. And of course, you could just remove the 'archive' CDB entirely.
