SharePoint 2007 to 2010 VMWARE Migration
Everyone,
Our company is migrating SP 2007 to 2010 our 2007 is on vmware except for the SQL server. My question is what is the best way and where do we start for creating a vmware virtual farm for 2010.(everything virtual). I dont know a lot about virtualization.
So I just need a foundation on where to start on get the new 2010 environment started with the virtualization process for VMWARE.
Thank

See the
deployment and planning documentation for planning your SharePoint 2010 farm. The Hardware and software requirements (SharePoint Server 2010) article details the
software you'll need. In general:
Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. 64-bitSQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008 R2, or 2012. 64-bitSharePoint Server 2010. This is only 64-bit.The SharePoint prerequisites (these can be downloaded with the Prerequisites.exe tool that is included in the SharePoint media)
As for migration, you will likely use the
database attach approach or use a third party migration tool. If you have any custom solutions or other customizations that live outside of the content database you will need to install these in the new farm, though note you may experience issues with them
if they are not built for SharePoint 2010 in mind.
In your SP2007 farm you should run the
preupgradecheck stsadm operation to get a feel for any work you'll need to do to prepare your farm and content for migration. Which edition SharePoint are the 2007 and 2010 farms?
If you're looking for specific VMware information for creating virtual machines, I recommend checking out
the VMware communities.
