SharePoint 2007 Metadata Issue
We have created various content types to collect metadata that drives the content which is displayed on Data View Web Parts. In these content types we have defined required fields. These required fields are not consistent between the various content types though. We have Document set as the default content type and allow this to be changed throughout the life of the document. We have encountered an issue where required metadata is remaining after a user changes the content type. The field is no longer part of the different content type, but when we attempt to remove the data from datasheet, which is the only area where we can display the fields, we get this error: “Changes to the current row cannot be saved due to invalid data or missing data in required fields.” The files are generally created with Office 2003 although a select few users have Office 2007. We are using SharePoint 2007 with a version of 6510. The workaround that I found, which is unacceptable, is to delete the document and remove the fields from the custom/advance properties in the document. Then upload the document back to the site. This is not acceptable as all previous versions of the document would be lost. Has anyone else experienced this and found a more reasonable solution? We are looking for a no code solution to this as our Site Collection is a no code deployment. Please let me know if more information is required.

I would suggest making the field not required.
