SharePoint 2007 > Document Library > Filter > Group By Column
Hi all,This is probably a very technical question but...I am migrating my office from using a file share to usingSharePoint document libraries, I've sat down with people and we've bashed out some initial metadata. From the offset we'd like to Group By on more than 2 columns to make a structure thats expandable and collapsable but looking very similar to the old File Share structure, but without using folders in the document library. Is there anyway to have more than 2 levels of Group by in a filter?I am creating the filters myself so I'm happy to go into the depths of 'the beast' to tweak an SQL statement or anything, I just can't find where to tweak or even if it's possible.Hope someone can helpDave H

Well Grouping isn't strictly a filter as it doesn't remove anything from the view (and you have more than two levels of filter available to you when creating a view), but in the User Interface there is indeed a maximum of two Grouping levels when creating a View. So you need programming if you want more. (Unless there is a ready-made piece of code out there in codeplex for instance) Ask in the programming forum if you are interested in programming this. Just to let you know there is a way of getting 3 levels of grouping in SharePoint list viewbut it includes using sharepoint designer and dataview (Which is perhaps a bit more technical)Osvaldo Sousa http://inoblog.com

I should perhaps add that because you have several different filters, you can use these when creating Views to create Views at different levels. So for instance you could have new fields Category, Sub-Category and Sub-Sub-Category and then create Views based on the different combinations possible. So you could have one View that is Filter 1: category = A Filter 2: sub-category = 1 Filter 3: sub-sub-category = a and so on. I'm sorry But I have to ask, I wrote a book back in 2008-2009 Called The Beast , I put some of it online for PPL to look @ But not all of it,I will not say what it is about But my book come's out this year, After Many Hour's of Having to rewrite and Edit.. Then I run a cross this and I really got curious to how 2 PPL could possibly , Come up with the same title during the same year. I have all of My Right's are Protected and I really hope that you and I are not writing anywhere close to the same thing. I'm sorry I just had to ask, It was just too coincidental. Forgive me if I'm Wrong , But thing's seem amiss.I Thank You All For You're time..Author /Writer : Mary E. Foster
