Setup an Alert Digest for Discussion Board
I am trying to set up the capability to have certain users subscribed to alerts on a Discussion Board List, where they would receive an update on new items added to the list once or twice a day in a digest format. The difficulty here is that I only have Site Admin permissions, so I am limited in what I can do to implement this. I've seen that you can create custom Alert templates, but it seems to require stsadm to install them. I've also seen that you can specify an alert interval, but I'm not sure if that will create an alert in a usable digest format or not. I am trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this given the permissions I have. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. For bonus points, it would be really nice if I could aggregate the alerts from several discussion lists, but I don't want to push my luck :)

Hey KLilley, Without the ability to create and deploy a custom solution you could still accomplish this task by creating a SharePoint Designer workflow. Before I explain how to do this this first let me ask do you have access to SPD? Thanks! TomTom Molskow - SharePoint Architect - Linked-In - SharePoint Gypsy

Hi Tom, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately we're not allowed to use SPD on this site either. It's a rather strictly controlled environment. I'm just trying to see if there's any way to pull it off using just OOTB functionality, including javascript and the built-in web services. I can request certain types of changes, such as master page changes, but I'm not sure exactly what all they're willing to let us do.

If you are asking only for OOB functionality, don't post to the Design/Customization forum. Using the built-in web services are however *not* OOB functionality. (Questions on them go to the Programming forum) Moving to Admin.SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters

Hey KLilley, Maybe sending the Alerts as an aggregated RSS feed would make more sense. Have a look at this free tool - the SharePoint 2077 RSS Feed Aggregator - http://sharingpoint.blogspot.com/2007/05/sharepoint-2007-rss-aggregator-web-part.html I hope that helps!
