Setting up a email for a user
Howto specify a email address for a specific user in Sharepoint.? We are not using a Active Directory domain user. They are local to the server that is running sharepoint. The sharepoint server itself is not member of a domain and is a simple workgroup server. Are the following mandatory ? - Sharepoint server being a member of domain server. - the user being listed in Active Directory.

Hi Swamimcl, Specifying the email address is easy enough. You simply need to have the user edit their profile to include their email address (the administrator can also do this). However that is not the end of the solution. In order for Sharepoint to send emails to the users (I am assuming you will be using some sort of Announcement Alerts) the Sharepoint server will need access to a SMTP server that is internet aware. This could be installed locally on the sharepoint server. Then you will need to ensure that it can route mail out to the cloud. This will only allow outbound mail flow, and can be affected by firewall rules etc. Sharepoint is not dependent on AD. It can utilize it however it can also use Sharepoint Users and Groups. -matt

What Matthew Mattoon said is perfectly right, and I will give you the detailed steps how to add a property: 1. Navigate to Shared Services Administration > User Profile and Properties, click Add profile property. 2. In Add User Profile Property page, fill all required filed. Please make sure that you select Email as the property type and change Edit Settings to Allow users to edit values for this property. Click OK to save and exit. Hope the information can be helpful. -lambert
