Setting the Visibility of Documents based on Metadata
In my document Library, I want to set visibility of documents with a Workflow Status of "In Progress" to FALSE. This visibility would apply to anyone with read access to the library.
I've thought of a couple options -- but they are not very attractive
Setting permissions manually on the document(s) - an administrative hassle that wont fly for my customer
Creating a custom event handler that automatically changes permissions of the document based on the value of the metadata - a support hassle
This is a MOSS install... is there something built-in that I can take advantage of?

Can you use a standard document apprioval workflow so that only approved documents and versions are visible to library readers? That's exactly the way an approval workflow works. Just use the workflow settings in the Ribbon and base your approval
workflow on the "Approval - SharePoint 2010" template.
(I think this isn't as much a managed metadata issue, if I read your question correctly?)

Thanks Chris, I tried it (I'm using MOSS 2007). Tried the approval workflow but the document is still visible to a user with "Read" access. Any suggestions?

That can't be right. This is a pre-2010 SP forum. Users are not asking about SP 2010.2010 Books:
SPF 2010; SPS 2010; SPD 2010; InfoPath 2010; Workflow etc.
2007 Books:
WSS 3.0; MOSS 2007; SPD 2007; InfoPath 2007; PerformancePoint; SSRS; Workflow
Both lists also include books in French; German; Spanish with even more languages in the 2007 list.
