Set content type to document library template
I have a document library template(.stp file) that has my folders hierarchy. I need to set my default content type of document library to this template. How can I do it? Any workarounds?

Hi Belal, For this issue, if I dont misunderstand your requirement, you want to reset the default content type of the template. Upload the .stp file(e.g aa.stp) to the List Template Gallery (from site settings, click list template), then create a document library bb based on the template(aa). Go to the bb librarys list settings, click document library settings, in the content types, click change new button order and default content type to set the default content type. Then save document library as template again. Please check it, if its not this issue, please feel free to let me know. Best Regards.Qiao Wei TechNet Community Support

Hi Belal, First, I am so sorry that I misunderstand your requirement. For this issue, you can try this way behind. Save the document library which has your content type as template bb.Then go to the list template gallery, click the bb and then save it to local.Change the two .stp file to .cab file aa.cab(the original .stp file) and bb.cab, then decompress them to aa and bb folder. In the bb.cab folder, open the manifest.xml in editor mode, find the content type which you want to add to the aa.stp file, copy the entire ContentType tag and then paste it to the manifest.xml file of the aa folderThen, open command prompt and run the makecab command in the C:\Windows\System32 folder to reset the .cab file to .stp file. The command as follows: makecab path\manifest.xml path\templatename.stp Please check it, if there is any problem, please feel free to let me know. Best Regards.Qiao Wei TechNet Community Support

Hi Qiao, I need to make sure that you understand what I want to do. I have a document library called All Projects and Another document library called Project. Project document library contains folders tree so I saved this document library as a template. So that I can create new Project(template file) in All Projects. I tried your solution but I couldn't understand steps 3,4,5. I don't know if your solution will satisfy my requirements or not. Thanx Qiao

Hi Belal, I seems that you want to reuse a folder structure in one document library, not a content type, as SharePoint by default just allows to save list, site as template, and create site columns, site content types to use in lists and libraries, you cannot reuse one list template in other lists as part of the list, so you will not be able to just reuse your custom folder hierarchy, . In this situation, you may consider creating a custom web part with a button to create the folder structure with programming, or custom menu items in item ECB menu to create the folders.
