Service Monitoring
Is it possible to monitor a service an only alert if it has been down for more than 10 minutes? The scenario is this, we have a bunch of web servers that have a script to restart the IIS service every morning around 3am, this causes a lot of unactionable alerts as we get alerts for each website serviced by the servers. So I want to change the monitor to only generate an alert if that service has been down more than 10 minutes. Any ideas?Paul Arbogast

You should schedule a recurring maintenance mode for these servers by putting them in a group, and then using the maintenance mode scheduler tool.Microsoft Corporation

Yeah thats what I have in place, and it does the trick, I was just hoping for an override setting that I could use instead. Paul Arbogast

Hi I'd agree with Dan - this scenario is really what scheduled maintenance mode is for. However, as a more general discussion, if you only wanted to alert if a service was down for more then 10 minutes then you'd really need to look to script a solution. If you have a script to hand then we can help plug it into OpsMgr for you. If you don't mind getting the alerts (which for monitors should auto-resolve) and just want to stop notifications then there is an Alert Aging setting on subscription (just make sure that you don't set a notification when the alert is closed): http://www.scom2k7.com/drastically-reduce-alert-noise-in-scom/ Cheers Graham View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

I prefer to use a consecutive sample module for this type of scenario. http://blogs.technet.com/b/jonathanalmquist/archive/2011/06/21/windows-service-monitoring-reduce-false-alerts-with-consecutive-sample-module.aspxHTH, Jonathan Almquist - MSFT

Jonathan, I'm getting a strange error when trying to seal the management pack, I get this D:\MPS>mpseal d:\mps\input\Service.Monitoring.Library.xml /I "d:\mps\mp" /KeyFile "d:\mps\k ey\PairKey.snk /Company "CompanyName" /Outdir "c:\mps\output" : A valid company name is required to seal this ManagementPack. I replaced the actual company name with "CompanyName", do you know what might cause that or is my syntax wrong?Paul Arbogast

Syntax looks good to me. Verify you're using double quotes around the company name.

I figured out the problem, I was missing the closing " after PairKey.snk I also had to fix the location of the Outdir
