Server response 500 to Submit gets no feedback to the user!

Is this TechNet's version of Answers' Oops! ?

FWIW I have checked the list of threads which are supposedly similar to my Title by doing a second search of this forum and then sorting by date.  I think that each of the above "similar" questions should include a timestamp, so I could assess how relevant they might be to my incident report without having to do this second search.

Whoa.  It's even more useless than that.  This post is supposed to be going to Reportabug. But the Ctrl-k that I did (to start the second search to try to assess the currency of these "similar" threads) is opening in my IE forums set.  And now that I have noticed that and am trying to get into Reportabug by using one of these examples I am still being shown IE forums?  So, I have had to do both that and get into the Reportabug forum before I tried my search (for 500)...

Well, incredibly, the most recent post and thread about this symptom was in May and it was about the bridge which I am not using.  So, I conclude that this is not a duplicate and no one else has yet reported this symptom.  We'll see...

What's the issue?

When we post on Answers frequently we get a response to a Submit which starts by "Oops..." or "Sorry...".  When we post here we get the same effect but with a less specific problem symptom (unless as I am indicating here that we are tracing at the time and go back to inspect the trace).  I won't comment on the frequency because I don't post here as often.  Mostly it occurs when I am posting in a message list view of a thread.  So that would be similar to my Answers experience too, where mostly I am posting in a preview thread when it happens.  Yesterday it happened for most of my posts.  My workaround, similar to my workaround on Answers, is to open the thread in its own tab, do a Ctrl-F5 Refresh (important), do a Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c copy of my Submit and then in the clone a Quote, Ctrl-a, Ctrl-v and Submit.  On Answers that is usually enough.  Lately, here on TechNet, I often find that what is being Pasted is unusable.  I then have to go back to the source tab, go into its HTML view, do a Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c of that, then switch back to the clone, go into its HTML view and do a Ctrl-a, Ctrl-v there.  Then I can Update and Submit, thus achieving what was supposed to have happened before I got my Oops Sorry or (hidden) 500 response.

So the "issue" is that this is a PITA and a significantly NEGATIVE "experience" that happens more often than I am willing to be silent about.

Good details. I submitted this as a bug request.

Robert, we're having trouble repro'ing this. Do you have suggestions for repro steps?

Thanks!

Do you have suggestions for repro steps?

I guess you have to use my My Threads.   <eg>

Let's see if this one works.  I'll turn on DT NC which of course will probably mean that it will work...

Hmm...  DT Console tab is showing a pile of messages.  I have the option enabled which says produce messages even when the DT is not enabled.  There is no timestamp on any of them so it would be difficult to know how relevant any of them would be for this session.

It just happened again trying to add this from its message list

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/713df017-159e-4c75-b6fa-be55aaecf210/when-did-it-become-ok-to-release-windows-updates-without-any-documentation?forum=w8itproinstall

Going to the thread list allowed the post.  Atypically this one was just a Reply to the OP, so no other interaction with the thread.

Naturally I didn't have NC enabled so I can't say what the initial error symptom looks like internally but externally I now have a post which I will continue to get warnings about if I try to "leave the page".  This means that any new posts on that page will all have to be forked out into their own thread anyway, thus avoiding the original symptom.

Or I will at least remember that I have the DT recording console messages.  Oops.

I may have missed the button when clicking Submit.  That locked it, so then I had to clone the thread and re-post.

So, it looks like the DT Console log is more useless than I would have imagined.  E.g. no clue at all about the thread being posted to via the message list's preview.  At least they got that last detail captured.

And I'm still not turning on the DT soon enough (or more significantly turning it on and using its Network capture tool)...

These "diagnostics" really are useless.

The message list remains useless for trying to recreate the symptom because the hung Edit frame can not be cancelled.  Interestingly Refresh (via Address bar button) does not cause a Leaving? warning.

Robert, how often does this happen and when did it happen last?

Could this be related to the server issues we've been getting (where it seems random)?

Robert, how often does this happen and when did it happen last?

I am now documenting each occasion as above.  Unfortunately I still have not gotten into the habit of ensuring that Network Capture is active before clicking Submit.  I'll do that now, though.   ; )

Looks like there is more than one symptom description which produces the same external symptom.

I finally managed to get the DT NC started before doing a Submit from a Message list but the NC shows nothing happened!?  WTH?  But now the Input frame is locked just as I once saw it locked after the 500 response which started this thread and have seen it locked frequently when I have not had any tracing active.

FWIW here are the last 3 messages in the Console log

These are frequently seen when I go there to look for some clues about this symptom.

So now what?  I should have started the UIResponsiveness tool too?

Here is the actual message I was trying to reply to, when I opened it into its own thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/5cec1c50-d8d8-426e-bed5-b11f9a78fa74/opening-appdata-by-typing-appdata-in-win-q-restartscrashes-explorerexe-?forum=w8itproperf
I had both NC and UR enabled when doing that Submit.  NTF.  However, looks like UR may be a preferred diagnostic.  Wow.  Mouseovers.  ms timing.  I will definitely need to have one of these to capture the next instance of a broken Submit.  In fact, I'm thinking that both the Console log and NC may then be redundant or just a way of summarizing what the UR tool could show given appropriate filtering (which I have yet to try to use.)

Progress, I think.

This time instead of doing a Refresh, to get rid of the useless Leaving? prompt I went to the next page and came back (exploiting a bug).  And so will now try posting in the same Message list...

This doesn't make any sense.  I have reproduced the symptom with tracing but the tracing is from another tab which no longer is active?  Oh. It may still be active on another window (e.g. another session).  But the DT definitely thinks that this tab is where it is helping.  E.g. clicking Bring IE to the foreground switches to this tab.

I wish there was a way of capturing all of this stuff.  Otherwise I can't see any point in just getting screenshots.  It's just as I have described.

I guess I had better do a RIES.  Get a new bas

I got the opportunity to complain about an actual instance of this for a Survey answer.  For the record

My rating is based on a frequently occurring problem.  Trying to respond to a thread which is previewed in My Threads the Submit frequently fails (no response).  I have learned that the best tactic when this happens is to clone the thread in its own tab, copy by response before leaving the first tab and then trying to Submit it again using the clone.  Sometimes, less frequently the Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c that I did apparently is Pasted as some kind of source (not HTML) and in that case I need to go back to the first tab, get into its HTML source view, copy that, then switch back to the clone, get into its HTML source view, Paste the original's HTML and then Submit.  Fortunately the second Submit with the HTML source seldom fails but the frequency that these defects occur is very irritating and definitely impacts both my UX and my opinion of MS since it has been going on like this for too long with only token interest.  C.f. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/0d9f275c-bfd5-4ddd-a944-cc7a308c64ad/server-
