In a standalone VM with WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007 is it possible to send an alert/mail? Thanks

Hi there. Yes, it's possible. Please see this TechNet article: Configure outgoing e-mail settings (Office SharePoint Server). Hope this helps. Regards, MagnusMy blog: InsomniacGeek.com

Ok. In my standalone virtual machine I have installed the SMTP service (with anonymous authentication), I have set the outgoing e-mail setting (with the name of the machine), inside the SP site I have inserted a new user with a notification by a email: the user is inserted with success but no email is sent. What do I do now? Thanks

Hi, Once the emails are configured properly. Users needs to login to the SharePoint site and subscribe for alerts. If you want alerts on the Document Library/List then go to the Document Library/List. From the actions menu click on the Alerts and in the alerts page you need You have to select one of the below Change Type All Changes New Items are added Existing items are modified Items are deleted You also need to select the send alerts for these changes when Anything changes Someone else changes Someone else changes created by me You also need to select the when to send alerts Send e-mail immediately send a daily summary send a weekly summary Hope this helps Thanks, Skancharla

First test that your SMTP server is working and is able to send email, a quick way would be to send it via Telnet. You can check the following article to test your smtp server. http://www.activexperts.com/activemail/telnet/ Also make sure that you use the proper domain name or else it will generate a NDR not send an email. even for the From Address and Reply-To Address while configuring the outgoing email settings under Central Administration. -Mukesh

Hi Mukesh, I have tried the sending with a sample program by specifying as smtp server the name of the virtual machine and I have obtained the message that the host is not located. I have tried with the IP of the VM and the message is changed: "Unable to relay to mymail@hotmail.com". Thanks
