Select an OU or SCCM overite the existing computer object
Setting computername during deployment Using the OSDComputerName variable Thanks Niall, this works perfectly, i found that the using this method will rename the PC to what i want it and keep the computer object in the correct structure if it already in AD. Perfect! The only minor issue now is OU selection for a PC not already in AD but to be honest it requires MDT which seems a nightmare and overcomplicated setup for what we want. we'll just manually move the objects to the correct OU if they are new to AD. Thanks for everyones help. Darren

Are you using MDT integrated with SCCM? If so this should be fairly simple Thanks John, to be honest MDT just confuses the hell out of me and seems little overkill for the options that we need. Thank you for your input. Darren

Hi Darren, You can keep the same name. To set the computer namer create a vpscript that allows you to prompt for computer name http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/5924e840-eb6e-48c1-858f-766a5be625a6/ Here is one that will allow you to select the OU: http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Systems_Management_Server/Q_25356093.html Blair Muller

Hi John, I have seen some mention of MDT and need to investigate it, its not currently in use and i have never used at all before so need to see what i need to do to use it. Do you know if this will allow the existing computer object to just be overwritten without the need of building something in to select an OU? I'm glad it can be achieved though! Darren

Hi, We are currently in the process of designing a OS build routine using SCCM, our current version is SCCM 2007 SP2. We need some specific features that i cannot seem to find clarity on whether SCCM can do it We need to be able to specify the computer name within the PE environment then will AD simply join that PC to the AD replacing the existing computer object with the same name thus keeping the Active Directory structure in tact? Or if it doesn't is there anyway a tech building the PC can select the OU for the PC to be placed in after specifying the PC name? Its vitally important for us to be able to specify the PC name and place it in the correct OU for GPO reasons. Please can anyone shed any light on this for me? i cant seem to find any answers anywhere! Thanks
