Secondary Protection for data stored on VTL DPM 2012 R2

All,

We have a VTL created on Data Domain which is currently acting as primary DPM protection for a number of our client servers.

We are using DPM2012R2  Ver 4.2.1312.0 Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.

When I attempt to add it to my DR site, on my secondary DPM server, I receive:

"DPM was unable to get the list of data sources on CLIENTSERVERNAME that are protected by the primary DPM server DPMSERVERNAME.  Make sure that DPMSERVERNAME is protecting the data sources for which you want to set this DPM server as the secondary server.  If the problem persists, restart the DPMWriter Service on DPMSERVERNAME."

I believe it can't read the data on the virtual tapes because they are not loaded in the VTL slots.

Is anyone secondarily protecting VTL data successfully? I can't find anything out there where someone has it working.

Thank you,

David Aslin

Hi,

DPM can only secondarily protect disk based recovery points, not tape based recovery points.  You would need to add disk protection for the client servers if you need to add secondary protection.  So basically it would be disk to disk to tape (D2D2T) on the primary DPM server, and disk to disk D2D) on the secondary DPM server.
