Searching the Contacts List
In short, I have built a search center that I want to dedicate solely to searching the company's contacts list. I have tried to set the scope of the search to only the contacts list, but cannot seem to find the correct name to enter into the scope field to accomplish this task. I have verified all configurations of the Contacts list allow the list to be searched and indexed. If there is a specific name I need to use other than "Contact", let me know. If I have to configure the Contacts list to be a scope, let me know as well. Thanks!

Hello Tony, I assume you’re are running SharePoint Server 2007? If so, it provides functionality to import your users from Active Directory, which you can then crawl and search using the People scope, which is preconfigured. If you're not running SharePoint Server 2007, are you running Windows SharePoint Service 3.0 or Microsoft Search Server (full or express)? Is the company's Contact list a SharePoint list? If so, you may be able to create a scope that contains all items under a URL, such as http://Server/Lists/Contacts. This should allow you to just search for the items in this list. Reagrds, Hiran Microsoft Online Community Support Hiran, We are currently running MOSS 12.0.0.6421 on both our test machine and our live machine. We originally were going to attempt to populate the Sharepoint contact list with the user information from Active Directory, but decided against it (for at least the time being). However, if there's a simple solution to establishing a reliable connection between the Sharepoint Contacts list and Active Directory, that would be a very good. However, my question revolves more around searching the Sharepoint contacts list with an independent Contacts Search page we've created. The contacts list we have established is within the default "Contacts" list within Sharepoint. I have tried to use the name "Contacts" for the input for search scope, but that did not work. If there's a specific name for the default contacts list or a setting that needs to be set before I can search it (even though I know the list is set to be searchable), let me know. Thanks!

Hello Tony, The MOSS feature for importing users from Active Directory doesn't populate them into a SharePoint list; it creates user profiles for them. By default, SharePoint only has 2 out of the box scopes for search, the "All Sites" and "People" scope. If you wish to add more scopes, you must go to the Shared Services Provider Administration pages (a hyperlink is found in the Central Admin Site) and click on the Search settings hyperlink. On this page you should find a link for "Scopes", where you can create a scope called "Contacts". Scopes are very flexible, and you could try creating one to meet your needs several different ways. You could add a rule to the scope based on URL as I mentioned below, or you may be able to add one based on content type. You can examine the existing People scope for an example of that kind of rule. After you create the scope, you will have to either wait for scope compilation or click the link to update the scopes immediately. Once done, this should allow you to specify "Contacts" as the scope in your custom query page, and return only the results that match the rules you specify in the scope.
