Saving PDF files seamlessly back to Sharepoint
We're running Sharepoint 2007 Enterprise. We have a document library which contains soft copies of faxes receved from customers in PDF format. Staff in our Service Centre need to be able to:- open a PDF file- make edits to it (e.g. in Adobe Acrobat Professional)- save the file back to Sharepoint.I know there's a workaround to save the PDF to the local PC and then go back into Sharepoint and load it back into Sharepoint - but this is too time-consuming and error-prone. While it's a very straighforward and seamless user experience for MS Office files type such as Word or Excel, we have spent literally months trying to figure out how to do this for PDF files and have still not come up with a workable solution. The closest we got was to use some software called SwiftWriter from Omtool, but unfortunately it doesn't work on folders containing more than 366 files.Does anyone have a solution for this?

First, please make sure you can open the Explorer View of the document library by selecting the Explorer View in the views drop down list. You can then double click to open the PDF file to edit in the Explorer View just as in Windows Explorer. After editing, just click save. If you had created a new PDF file, you can save the file into SharePoint document library with the UNC address like \\SharePointServerName\DocumentLibraryName\ Please let me know if you has problem with Explorer View in SharePoint document library.

Moving to the normal Admin forum. There doesn't seem to be anything ECM-like about this question.WSS FAQ sites: http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com and http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com Total list of WSS 3.0 / MOSS 2007 Books (including foreign language) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/v3%20WSS%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

I'm having the same problem and when I switched to the explorer view I couldn't check the file out thus I couldn't save the file as a new version.

If I set the document library to require check out before editing and when I open Word document from Explorer View, there would be toolbar bottom in Word to ask me to check out the file. That is kind of client integration function implemented in client applications. You can find other third party tools besides SwiftWriter from Omtool, such as WISDOM PDF SharePoint Save. You need to check out this reasonably priced alternative to Adobe Acrobat called PDF Studio that is also integrated with Sharepoint. Using PDF Studio by Qoppa Software, it’s possible to open PDF documents directly from / to Sharepoint, review and mark them up in PDF Studio then save them straight back to Sharepoint. Qoppa Software lets you download a trial for free, too, at www.qoppa.com/pdfstudio/index.html ValueGal Value Always
