To clear up the Transaction Log, take the Transaction Log backup of the database. More details here. Also check if any unwanted files on the drive hosting the transaction log can be cleaned up. As permanent fix, please review the application needs and set a correct max size to the transaction log. Pradeep Adiga My blog: http://www.sqldbadiaries.com

As mentioned earlier, ask the DBA to schedule regular transaction log backups on that database. As a one time activity unrestrict the transaction log file size. Ensure that the drive hosting the transaction log has enough space If not, add one more file to the transaction log on drive which has sufficient space. I cant do anything on the DB as the database is out of disk space. I'm busy doing a disk cleanup on the database drive & Compressing old files. Is this okay to do? Once i can access the db, i will try & do what you reommended.

If you are not sure about the transaction log file name please do not compress .MDF, .LDF, .NDF, .DAT files on that drive. Else database may not come up Pradeep Adiga My blog: http://www.sqldbadiaries.com

If you are still getting "Log file is full" open SSMS and please initiate a transaction log backup as explained earlier. Ensure that you are taking the transaction log backup to some other drive which has enough space. Pradeep Adiga My blog: http://www.sqldbadiaries.com

Open a new query window in SSMS and execute sp_readerrorlog. Look for error related to this database. Pradeep Adiga My blog: http://www.sqldbadiaries.com
