SQL Server sysadmin rights
Hi all I have this error when doing the Prerequisite installation check. I dont have any experience with SMS2003. Our company just decide to buy SCCM because of the Office 2007 deployment. I create a virtual server for itself. Install SQL server 2005 on that virtual server as well. But when i do the prerequisite installation check, I have this error "SQL Server sysadmin rights" Either the user account running Configuration Manager Setup does not have sysadmin SQL Server role permissions on the SQL Server instance targeted for site database installation or the SQL Server instance could not be contacted to verify permissions. Setup cannot continue. I have no experience with SQL that's why dont know how to solve it. And I putMSCM as a SQL Server namebecausethat is a server name for that server. What do I need to put in the Management point? Thank you. enz

Is the user that started the prereq checker also member of the local admins group on the SQL server (either direct or via group membership)? If there will be only a single server hosting all SCCM roles you should use that servername as the management point.

The account i'm using is the domain administrator account. And on that SQL server, I tried to add that account to all of the SQL related group under Local Users and Groups.Could you please tell mewhat should I do to solve it. Thank you.

This is all I know (comes from our prereq check documentation): SQL Server (Sysadmin rights) Failure Verifies that the user account running Configuration Manager Setup has been granted sysadmin SQL Server role permissions on the SQL Server instance targeted for site database installation. SOL Server sysadmin role permissions are required in order to create the site database and configure necessary database role and login permissions for Configuration Manager sites. A SQL Server best practice is to remove the Builtin\Administrators group from the sysadmin role on installed SQL Server instances. If the Builtin\Administrators group has been removed from the sysadmin role, the user account running Configuration Manager Setup must be granted sysadmin role permissions for setup to succeed.

Hi wally I tried your way but didn't solve the problem. I still not able to finish the prerequisite installation check. I'm really sure that my domain administrator account have the sysadmin rights. I even get into the server and allowed all the rights to it (just want to make sure it works) but still didn't work. I still got this error while doing the prerequisite installation check: Either the user account running Configuration Manager Setup does not have sysadmin SQL Server role permissions on the SQL Server instance targeted for site database installation or the SQL Server instance could not be contacted to verify permissions. Setup cannot continue. I'm using Windows 2003 SP2 on a VMWare server. I also have SQLExpress install on it. What did i do wrong? Hope someone could help me out of this. Thank you very much. enz

SQL Express? I don'tthink we support that. I thought it was only supported on full SQL Server editions. Try a full edition of SQL Server, I bet you'll get further :-)

Hi Wally, I installed the full SQL2005version yesterday. I'm able to get into the database from a different server. I got the SP2 installed as well. But when I do the prerequisite check, I still got that error. Then I tried to install theSCCM without doing the prerequisite check, up to the installation settings, I chose simple setting and guess what, I got this Fatal Error: Configuration Manager Setup cannot continue because of the following error: SQL Server must be installed on this computer in order to use simple settings. I checked the services under Computer Management and see the following services are running: SQL Server (SQLCSSM) SQL Server Agent (SQLSCCM) SQL Server Browser SQL Server FullText Search (SQLSCCM) SQL Server Reporting Services (SQLSCCM) SQL Server VSS Writer Am I missing something? And I'm really sure an account i'm using have local administrator rights, domain administrator rights, and sysadmin right. Final question: Does SCCM really difficult to install? It costs me nearly 2 weeksandI'm still going no where . Am I able to get support from microsoft? (just ask but I dont think so ) thank you enz

Your answer is in the prereq check: Configuration Manager Setup cannot continue because of the following error: SQL Server must be installed on this computer in order to use simple settings For a simple install (which we never recommend), SQL has to be on the same box as Configuration Manager. You have to do a custom setup, which is what we do recommend) if they are on different boxes. As to the last two questions - NO Configuration Manager is not difficult to install. However, you have to have a valid SQL Server (which you did not have initially - express) and have to meet all the prereqs. I just ran a class the past two days, and in two days, we: * prepared AD for Configuration Manager * installed a new Configuration Manager site * configured the site with a reporting point, fallback status point and software update point (on a remote server from the site server) * added boundaries and a couple of client agent configurations * installed five clients (all the VPC images we had in the class) * did inventory, reporting, created a query and collection * distributed software, including working with maintenance windows and branch DPs * distributed software updates * validated compliance with DCM * deployed a Windows Vista OS to a bare metal client through OSD and PXE * and did remote control All in two days. So it certainly can be done. Finally, free 'support' is offered here (whicha number of peopole from Microsoft (including myself) and other community members help monitor) and in other communities. Paid support is offered through product support.

Hi Wally Thanks for the very helpful response. Until now, I still dont know what did I do wrong but i'm able to manage the installation now.Yes, I didn't use the simple set up for the real installation. I just give it a try and see that error that's whyI post it up. The way I solve my problem is untick the install Management Point during the set up and it works beautiful. After the set up, I installed Management Point and now in the process of choosing the Discovery Method. We didn't plan to get the SCCM in the first place that's why we dont have any idea about it. Three months ago, Manager told me that he want to replace Office 2000 with 2007. And I just found out that it may be very hard or no chance to use AD to deploy Office 2007 that's why we bought SCCM + SCCM 2007 Administrator's Companion. If we plan it in advance, I rather to spend the money for the training course especially it only takes 2 days. Once again, thank you very much. If I have other question about SCCM, I'll post it up and looking for your help again

I've never heard of anyone having to not install an MP through setup, then adding it later. But as long as you are working, that's fine. The training course I mentioned was a custom one I ran for some new people we hired in the product group. It is not something you could attend, unless you'd already registered for the "one day" preconference training at TechEd next week (which if you have not done so a month or so ago, it filled up way back then). I was just stating that I had run this training, and we did all that in two days. That was a response to your statement/question about it being difficult/taking time. There is an official training course from Microsoft Learning (6451a). It is a five day training course. You might want to consider checking into it if you want more hands-on prior to having to do things on your own.

I am now in the process of installing a second test server to go through all the steps again but on a clean machineif anyone has any better ideas then please let me know as I really want to get SCCM 2007 SP1 done.cheersanyweb

Still - have you given the site server computer admin rights to the computer that SQL Server is running on? That is a requirement. If not, then it does not matter what else has been done.
August 24th, 2008 8:36pm

hi Wally, thanks for replying, this computer is the domain controller running AD/dhcp/wds and some other roles, it's also got SQL 2008 enterprise (180 day trial) installed on it,. I know you are not supposed to install sql server on a domain but this is only for testing purposes, the account i'm using is the domain administrator w2k8\administrator, i've reinstalled sql server 2008 3 times over the weekend and it's still failing again, i've started up sql server management studio gone into security/login and verified that w2k8\administrator has the sysadmin role listed so i don't know why it's not workingas the sql server is running on the same computer that i'm trying to connect from shouldn't the below not be necessary ?"Still - have you given the site server computer admin rights to the computer that SQL Server is running on? The site server computer account REQUIRES admin rights to each site system computer. It does not matter what account you are logged in under, but the account Configuration Manager is using to access the remote system. You need to add the site system computer account as an admin on the SQL Server (even if it is a domain controller). Try that. If that doesn't do it, then I'm out of luck, as I'm not familiar with named instances on SQL Server (though it should make no differencefrom what I know). You'd need Jeff or Stan to offer thoughts.

)Hello all,I've had the same problem when connecting to a remote SQL 2008 server from the SCCM pre-req checker....but resolved it by doing the following:Created my SPN with the FQDN of the SQL server as per this doc: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191153.aspx (there is another article out there which doesn't list using the FQDN for the SPN creation, this can be viewed here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/bb632649.aspx and this, I think, caused my problem)Added my SQL service account to the local admins group on both the SQL server and SCCM serverAdded my SCCM server computer account to the admins group on the SQL serverLogged onto the SCCM server as the SQL service account and ran the pre-req checker and got a success.Hope this helpsC.

I got success using a different approach:I simply made the computer account of the site server [server where SCCM will be installed] a member of domain admin group.Note: Right after this change, the prerequsite checker still failed. I went home.the next day when I ran the checker, it passed! I dont know why. I think some kind of replication needed to be done?I tried removing the site server account from domain admin group and adding it again, but again the checker failed. Now I am rebooting all three VMs to see if that solves the issue.BTW: This article....http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/486-how-can-i-install-sql-server-2008-in-windows-server-2008/page__p__662&#entry662.....does not make sense. He talks about adding the site server account to the builtin/Administrators groupButthe builtin/Administrators group does NOT have admin rights on any the SQL server machine and the SCCM machine! So how will it help? I even tried it. it dis not work.

ok after a reboot of all 3 servers (DC, SCCM and SQL server) the checker is reporting all is well. Hence the TESTED solution is: Make the computer account of the site server [server where SCCM will be installed] a member of domain admin group.

Open the applicationHost.config file located in the %Windir%\System32\Inetsrv\Config\ directory on distribution points that are enabled for Allow clients to transfer content from this distribution point using BITS, HTTP, and HTTPS . Search for the <requestFiltering> section. Determine the file name extensions that you will have in the packages on that distribution point. For each file name extension that you require, change allowed to true . For example, if your package will contain a file with an .mdb extension, change the line <add fileExtension=".mdb" allowed="false" /> to <add fileExtension=".mdb" allowed="true" /> . Allow only the file name extensions required for your packages. Save and close the applicationHost.config file. 2) When you Run the prerequisite checker (SPLASH.HTA the menu appears on software) there third option Management point computer FQDN on the intranet, type there SCCM server name(dot) domain name. 3) At the time of SCCM installation it ask for some update perquisites components for which screen will appear at that time follow bellow link. I fixed my problem with the Prerequisite Checker getting the "SQL Server sysadm rights" failure. I am installing a test system on a Windows 2008 R2 server that is running SQL2008. I did all the fixes mentioned in the forums and still got the failure. My fix was in the checker startup window where it asks for the SQL Instance name. I used the default for the Instance name so I entered Computername\MSSQLServer. That failed. When I went back and just entered Computername, without the \MSSQLServer, it worked with no failures.

I use SSMS to add the computer account to SA. Just like any other user account. Remember that it needs the $ on the end of the computer account. http://www.enhansoft.com/

Everything that you ae looking for can be found within the CM07 docs. If there is somethig that you can't find in there, come back to the forums and post your quetions. BTW I also recommend that you start your own thread, you will get better responces. Also, if you are setting up a new env. I would look at CM12 instead of CM07. http://www.enhansoft.com/
