SQL Server 2008 RTM SP2 support?
Hi Graham, Yes, the post that you refer to here make sense. But the OpsMgrTeam also, in the same article, refers to the Supported Configuration Statement article, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx, which doesn't mention SQL Server 2008 SP2 to be supported for the Data Warehouse database nor the Audit Collections database (only the ODB and the Reporting Server role) this doesn't make sense from my point of view. I have also asked the same question in the Ms Partner newsgroup (they are investigating this as we speak), and they have told me that the "Supported Configuration Statement article" in general only refers to new installations and not current. This of course make it even more confusing as you can understand.. Regards, Richard

Hi Mats, Thanks for answering. Unfortunately the Supported Configuration is "told" that it's used for new installations only and not current running environments, which I sadly lack information about here. And to that the "Reporting data warehouse" component for example (as for ACS as well) in the article doesn't mention anything about the SP2 (only sp1 for sql 2008), so it's rather vague defined what to expect here I think. Hi, Can anyone give some clarification about the support of SQL Server 2008 RTM Service Pack 2 for OpsMgr 2007 R2 environments today when CU4 was recently relased? Since CU4 now is availble for download I want to make sure that SQL Server 2008 SP2 is now supported to install, both new isntallations and upgrade, as well as for ALL related OpsMgr databases in an OpsMgr 2007 R2 CU4 environment? I can't find anything regarding the SP2 for SQL Server 2008 in the kb articles for CU4 (only SQL Server 2008 R2 upgrades) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2449679 or at the supported configuration http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx site. Can you please help us clarify this? The OpsMgr team has written a post about this as well but it's not clear if SP2 for SQL 2008 Server RTM do support all configrations including upgrades and new installations. http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/01/07/system-center-operations-manager-2007-r2-now-supports-sql-server-2008-sp2.aspx I'm also interested in to hear if there some special needs or positive benefits from running SQL Server 2008 R2 instead of the former RTM version? Thanks in advance for any help about this. Regards, Richard

Hi Richard. The Supported Configuration document http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx includes SQL 2008 SP2. So yes it is supported. :)mats.w | www.opsmode.com

Hi Richard I see what you mean on the supported configurations url. I suspect they have just been missed off but we should be able to get clarification on that. I was about to escalate this thread but realised that Alexey has already done this. So probably best to await his answer. Thanks for the info Graham. We will then await for an update. Regards, Richard

I can only find that it says that R2 is only supported for new installatins. And the blog post from the Ops Mgr team states that both DW and ACS database is supported on SP2. Maybe someone from MSFT can clear things out for us.. :) Couse it aint obvious.mats.w | www.opsmode.com

Hi Just to confirm - as per the http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx and http://blogs.technet.com/b/operationsmgr/archive/2011/01/10/ops-manager-2007-r2-now-supports-sql-server-2008-sp2.aspx - SQL 2008 SP2 is clearly supported for all database components. There is a note about a known issue with reporting - "When using SQL 2008 Service Pack 2, reports will only run correctly from the Operations Console. Running reports directly from SQL Reporting Services will not render correctly. This is a known issue that will be corrected in a future Cumulative Update." SQL 2008 R2 is slightly different. If you already have OpsMgr 2007 R2 installed then I believe that you need to make sure you have deployed CU4 before upgrading SQL to SQL 2008R2. If you are installing OpsMgr "fresh" \ green field then SQL 2008 R2 has been supported for some time - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2425714 Cheers Graham View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Hi Graham, Thanks for posting here. I'm sorry. but I can't really say that I agree with you when you say that "SQL 2008 SP2 is clearly supported for all database components" when referring to those articles. Like I'm pointing out here in the previous posts is that it's not pointed out for example in clear text in neither of the articles that SQL Server 2008 SP2 is supported for both new installations as for current (upgrades). The OpsMgrTeam blog also tell us that (referring to the supported configuration article) that the SQL Server 2008 SP2 is supported for all mentioned OpsMgr roles, but in the article for example ONLY SQL Server 2008 Sp1 or SQL Server 2008 R2 is mentioned as to be supported for both the Reporting data warehouse and the Audit collection database. Before I advise my customers to go ahead updating with the SQL 2008 SP2 for all their OpsMgr related sql 2008 servers we want to be absolutely sure that it is supported all the way. Regards, Richard

Hi Richard From here - http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/01/07/system-center-operations-manager-2007-r2-now-supports-sql-server-2008-sp2.aspx We now support the following roles on SQL Server SP2: Operations Manager database Data Warehouse database Audit Collections database Reporting* *Note: When using SQL 2008 Service Pack 2, reports will only run correctly from the Operations Console. Running reports directly from SQL Reporting Services will not render correctly. This is a known issue that will be corrected in a future Cumulative Update. All components are supported for upgrade and clean install unless otherwise stated. Hence SQL 2008 R2 has additional limitations and they are specified. Hope it makes sense. As far as I know, both upgrade and clean install are supported for SCOM 2007 R2 with SQL Server 2008 SP2. Hope this helps. Thanks.
