SQL Server 2008 BIDS project creation fails
Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise evaluation version on Windows Vista Business edition SP2 32-bit. Made sure that there was no previous SQL server installation and no previous Visual Studio installation. Tried to create an Integration Services project
in Business Intelligence Development Studio. Immediately got this error:
"Creating project 'project'...Project creation fails"
Doesn't seem like BIDS attempted to create the project.
Installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and got the same error.
I don't understand why a clean install of SQL Server 2008 R2 downloaded from the Microsoft site yesterday would have these issues. Was this product tested at all? Was anyone out there able to get a working BIDS on SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition?

SQL server 2008 enterprise edition failed to install correctly (BIDS could not create packages for integration services projects). So I removed SQL server 2008, removed the Visual Studio shell installed by SQL server, cleaned the registry of any SQL server
or Visual Studio entries, downloaded and SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition and found that this newer version didn't behave any better. BIDS cannot create packages at all. The status area shows "Creating project 'project'...Project creation fails". This
is the only information.
I have SQL server 2008 R2 Enterprise evaluation installed on a Windows Vista Business Edition service pack 2, 32-bit laptop. I installed Visual Studio SP1 after installing SQL server 2008 R2. In addition to installing Visual Studio 2008 SP1, I tried different
suggestions from the forum to no avail:
o Register vswizard.dll.
o Change owner permissions on the registry keys for vswizard (vswizard.viswizardengine.9.0, vswizard.wizcombo.9.0).
o Register msxml6.dll.
I only have one instance isntalled named MSSQLSERVER with instance ID "undefined". I've been trying for almost two weeks to install SQL Server 2008. Does anyone know why BIDS would be unable to create projects?

According to a post from the Visual C++ team on MSDN this is due to an interaction with Internet Explorer 8. The fix is described here
