SQL Core based licensing

Hi, i need  some help with SQL Std Ed licensing with software assurance.

All the documentation in regards to SQL lic is so confusing that i have begun where i started

So basically i have 2 * Hex core processors on 2 Nodes with 2 SQL Std servers on each Physical Node in FCI Cluster

I would hence be having 6 cores on each server and probably assigning 2 cores to each SQL

Would i be hence needing 2 core licenses or it has to a minimum of 4 cores per SQL Std server.

We have software assurance and hence i assume i do not need to license the passive server. My physical host will be on Hyper V.

So now will i still need 4 core SQL licenses per server?

Please follow Olaf advice and contact Microsoft for licensing.

It is hard to comprehend your(any) environment our a forum and suggest you license, you also need to keep in mind your company might have different contract than a typical IT frim example - higher education institues or schools or NGO etc.

also, you cannot trust someone's answer on forums regarding license- you/your company will be in trouble if you do it wrong and you have no one to blame(forum answers are not contract). check microsoft rep and get a contract.. that will protect you.

Hi,

if you wants installing SQL Server on the physical Server than, you must license all physical cores on th ephysical processors. for example: if you have 2 X CPUs with 4 core each, you need to license all 8 Cores. if you have 2 X CPUs with 2 Cores each, you need to buy 8 core licenses ( Minimum 4 cores even if you have only 2 cores).

I confirm that with your active Software assurance, you don't need to purchase the license for the passive instance.

thanks
