SQL Clarification

Dear Team,

The Customer has purchased SQL server 2008 product with 5 CALs to use as his ERP DB, which is running on Windows server standard R2 evaluation version, will be expiring in 20 days. ( Server spec is 1 processor, 6 cores, no virtual machines)

  1.       Since windows server 2008 license is no longer available, can he use the product key issued for 2012 server with existing 2008 evaluation version?
  2.       Would it be possible to buy only the license without CALs for this standalone server?
  3.       If he deploys new servers later on, does he need to purchase separate license per server, or is it possible to use CALS for the existing license?

Thanks

As with all licensing questions you should get the real answer from an MS licensing rep. But i'll do my best here.

Since windows server 2008 license is no longer available, can he use the product key issued for 2012 server with existing 2008 evaluation version?

In microsoft land this is called Downgrade Rights. I think you only have downgrade rights with volume agreements, but see here for details

Would it be possible to buy only the license without CALs for this standalone server?

You need at some point to purchase both the license and the CALs. Has anything been purchased yet? When you purchase SQL Server licenses they normally come with 5 CALs, and I think you can also purchase CALs separately.

If he deploys new servers later on, does he need to purchase separate license per server, or is it possible to use CALS for the existing license?

All new servers definitely require new licenses. I'm pretty sure they require new CALs as well.
