SP Config wizard fails to connect to database
I am trying to install a SP 2007 X64 SP2 farm on a Server 2008 R2 and connecting to SQL 2008 R2 database running on a seperate box using Server 2008 R2. The install goes along fine but the config wizard failes trying to connect to the database server. According to the error message it can't find the server or the database is missing. I did look at the log file but it is so large and too confusing for me. Both servers are domain members and I have used the default login for SQL server except for using domain administrator logins where no default is suggested. I am using the domain admin login with the SP config wizard. I have added most of the roles to the admin account at the SQL server. I have added the SQL Management console to the SP server and it seems to connect to the database with no problems. MS sample database AdventureWorks installed on the SQL server with no problems. I would appreciate any ideas you might suggest. I hope it is not a compatibility problem. Brian

Hi, 1. Have ping from SP server to SQl svr and vice versa? 2. Have you disable firewall for both server? Try to do that if you not doing it yet. I have the same problem too last time but it solved after i have done both checklist above.

Could you please be more specific on "I have used the default login for SQL server except for using domain administrator logins where no default is suggested. "? Could you please find relevant information in the latest PSConfig log that is saved in the following location: %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\Logs? And could you please try creating the configuration database with the PSConfig command line tools described in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263093(office.12).aspx ? The command can be something like this: psconfig.exe -cmd configdb -create -server <Server_name> -database <Database_name> -dbuser <DOMAIN\username> -dbpassword <password> -user <DOMAIN\username> -password <password> -addomain <domain_name> -adorgunit <org_unit> -admincontentdatabase <Database_name> If it still does not work, please let me know the command you used and the error message returned. Thanks for your reply. It did turn out to be a Firewall problem. I tried to be clear with my original problem description but does not always work out. What I meant by the default logins was that during the SQL installation there are default users setup, i.e. NT Authority, and no user input is required. But input is required for database admins, BU and restore admins, etc. I used the domain administrator account for all of these options. The same with the Sharepoint install. Since this is a test installation, and all new for me, I simply wanted the easiest setup possible. I am starting a new thread today concerning a SharePoint best practices point. Thank again Brian
