SP2007 Area Navigation Settings - Any Change cause an Unknown Error
Hi, We have an issue with SP2007, when we modify the navigation for one subsite and attempt to save the changes by clicking ok we get an 'Error' page with a description of Unknown Error. All we are changing is either the order or deleting a heading with a URL attached. Saving the changes takes roughly 5 minutes to complete and is not immediate. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Not onyl have i been getting "Unknown Error" but i have also been getting "This page has been modified by another author" + time. I have looked through all of the custom links and headings and found no abnormalities in the URL's in both the headings and the links. They all work perfectly. Thanks.

Hi RYADev, For this issue, you can follow these steps to solve it: 1. Go to Navigation and make a list of libraries that have been corrupted. (Look in the 'Selected Item' box at the bottom under Navigation and check the URL. If it is 8 miles long with lots of duplicated code, it is one of the problems). Don't try save, just click Cancel. 2. Click on the document libraries in question, then Settings, Document Library Settings, Title Description and Navigation. Change the display on quick launch to No. 3. Open SharePoint Designer and go to the web site view. At the bottom of the website view screen, choose the Navigation option. Delete the main document library. Save and exit. 4. On your SharePoint site, go to View All Site Content, click on the unlinked document libraries from step 2 and relink them to the quick launch. Also, I found that some users said this solution worked for them, maybe you can have a try: Temporarily deactivate the Publishing feature (be aware of doing so, as this may impact any user of the site who is working with draft documents that haven't yet been published). By deactivating this feature, the Quick Launch menu was now available under the Look and Feel column. You will be able to edit the Sites section (heading link & site links). Then reactivate the Publishing feature from the Site Collection Features section. Thanks & Regards, Peng Lei

Hi Peng Lei, Thank you for your email, however none of the navigation items are corrupted as described above but i seemed to notice something. The situation is, we have our public facing site, completely branded. In our news section we have folders to categorize / filter the news articles to be shown. Somehow instead of showing categories, three news articles have appears in the left navigation but were not 'created' by a user. These are the links we want removed. The curious thing is our category titles are folders, and the categories are link. These appearing news articles are folders with links... Its at this point when we hit delete on these items that the error occurs, the same errors occur when we add a new category. Would the above solution still apply? RYA Dev.

If i were to 'unpublish' the suspecting news articles (just in the current site collection pages directory) the links are removed from the left navigation and also the AreaNavigationSettings page. Publishing these pages then re-appear in the list. I once again unpublished the pages and attempted to edit the left navigation and the same error occurs. Finally i have moved these pages out of this directory. and the links are removed from both navigation and navigation settings. But we still cant add a new category. Any ideas. I will try the solution above soon. RYA Dev
