SMTS not correct, Showing code 0 for programs while none get installed & no Domain Join

SCCM 2012 R2

Recent change: CU1-4 installed a couple weeks ago.

My Windows 7 imaging process is broken. My SMTS log is showing that everything is successful but the machines are coming off the line with no programs, no CCM agent and no domain Join. It's just flat out wrong.

I am finishing up that testing phase of my Windows 8.1 tablets and I have similar problem with 1 application there. The SMTS log will say it installed correctly and it didn't. This also appears to be a random application each time, but always one.

This is not making sense to me as the only changes is the CU a few weeks ago. I have refreshed the DP's. I am not sure what else to do if the SMTS log doesn't know what is going on.

Hi,

Are you installing Software Updates during the TS? There are som updates that requires multiple reboot that are known for causing issues like this,  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2894518?wa=wsignin1.0

If you are installing applications after a reboot and they are not installed this could be the issue as well. http://ccmexec.com/2014/12/smstsmplistrequesttimeout-value-in-milliseconds/

Hejsan Jorgen, tack.

I am not using Software Updates in the TS. My TS is fairly simple. I do have a restart after Domain Join for my Win 8.1 but not Win 7. Here is what my Win 7 Looks like:

Restart in Windows PE

Format Disk

Set ComputerName (script)

Apply OS

Apply Data Image

Apply Windows Settings

Drivers

Join Domain

Setup Windows and ConfigMGR

Applications

Restart

Like I said very basic. Basically everything after the drivers is not working but the SMTS.log is reporting everything is working. I have never seen anything like it.

I guess this is fairly unique as this has drawn no attention.

I have recreated the Task Sequence from scratch with no applications. The SMTS log is still not accurate and the machines are still not joining the Domain.

Have you already examined the status message that the computer sent?
Why is "smsts.log not accurate"?
April 21st, 2015 1:18pm

For domain join issues, take a look at the log files under c:\Windows\Panther\UnattendGC

Which Errors can you see in Config Mgr Console --> Monitoring --> System Status --> Status Message Queries --> All Status Messages from a Specific System

Then Put Computername in it and Specify Time in the next Line.

For Domain Join Issues you can logon on the "broken" Client and view the Logs:

Windows\Debug\netsetup.log or

Windows\Panther\UnattendGC\setupact.log

[DJOIN.EXE] Unattended Join: DsGetDcName failed: 0x54b, last error is 0x0, will retry in 5 seconds

--> This is an Excample for problems with DNS, reason can be a bad Network Card driver

Another Idea: Did you update the Bootimages after upgrading to CU4?

April 22nd, 2015 4:14am

Hello,

First of all, I would logon to the computer and verify that I have network connectivity.

As a second test, I would create a new driver package, containing network drivers only (for the computer model), and then try again.

Thanks for all the replies! I really really appreciate it

The SMSTS log shows no failures. The Netsetup.log has no entries. The Panther\setupact.log shows a few odd things " [msoobe.exe] Failed to open event to start up services [0x80070002]" but then appears to proceed fine.

The account used for Domain join is not locked out. I have refreshed the drivers on the DP just incase the NIC driver got corrupt,  even though it appears to be fine in device manager and works after imaging.

Do you mean update boot images on the distro point?

I checked the status messages that the SMSTS.log sent. They read exit code "0" for all programs and there is no indication of domain join status whatsoever. The SMSTS.log is not accurate because all that information is not true. No programs get installed and none join the domain. This task sequence has been working for over a year.

Yes the Bootimages on DP. You can also copy the existing Image on Filesystem and add it via the Console. Than update the Copied Bootimage, and you can test it without any risks.

Check your step "Setup Windows and Configuration Manager"  - Path to CU4 Patch OK? Package is also updated?

Example:

PATCH="%_SMSTSMDataPath%\OSD\%YOURCLIENTPACKAGEID%\hotfix\KB3026739\Client\x64\configmgr2012ac-r2-kb3026739-x64.msp"

Can you post your Panther\setupact.log

That is good advice. That was the first thing after I checked the smsts.log. I did not create a new driver package only refreshed the DP.
April 27th, 2015 8:30am

Did you try it with another Hardware?

April 27th, 2015 8:33am

Yes, there are two separate types of machines.
April 27th, 2015 9:21am

They read exit code "0" for all programs and there is no indication of domain join status whatsoever. The SMSTS.log is not accurate because all that information is not true. No programs get installed and none join the domain.

That's why you have to examine the Windows logfiles (netsetup.log). smsts.log doesn't contain domain joining information.

Examine execmgr.log then. Something (whatever was defined in the program's command line) was executed successfully - which might also result in a program not being installed.

This may be interesting. I don't know what this is. I didn't read anything about having to specify a new path for client agents. Can you tell me more?

Yes I would like more information on the client package post regarding CU4. I made no changes to the client package and find no hotfix's.

"Failed to install product key [hr=0xC004F050]"

I never used this process for the product key. I have a script that runs afterward.

Wait for network init: Completed with hr=0x80004005

Isn't 80004005 access denied? So this saying access denied to?

It seems it takes your User:

Then you can be sure that you have an correct Driver in Bootimage.

I don't know what data ID's are. But I would think since the log is identical line by line until these last lines that this may not be it. But I am going to keep looking.

I leave the command support always on so I can pull the smsts.log off and use "net use" to copy it off, if I see a failure. I will check and see if it loses it's ip, but it downloads all the packages and info so it didn't lead me to believe that is loses network connectivity. Also, once the image is done, I can log in to the workstation and use the NIC with no issue.

I will set up a ping during imaging and see if it gives out.

Check your step "Setup Windows and Configuration Manager"  - Path to CU4 Patch OK? Package is also updated?

Example:

PATCH="%_SMSTSMDataPath%\OSD\%YOURCLIENTPACKAGEID%\hotfix\KB3026739\Client\x64\configmgr2012ac-r2-kb3026739-x64.msp"

Can you explain this to me further. I did not update any clients after I put CU1-4 on the server. Where are the hotfix's for the clients?

So I found this. I am guessing I need to push the KB2905002 and the R2 CU client updates to all machines.

I am getting some errors trying to upload the entire log. Here is an interesting part:

2015-04-21 12:02:30, Info       [0x090008] PANTHR CBlackboard::Open: C:\Windows\panther\commandexec\CommandExec succeeded.
2015-04-21 12:02:30, Info                         [SETUPUGC.EXE] Found run command in registry: description = [disable user account page]
2015-04-21 12:02:30, Info                         [SETUPUGC.EXE] Found run command in registry: credentials = { domain is not specified, username is not specified, password info not logged }

Shouldn't SCCM inject domain information?

Yes I would like more information on the client package post regarding CU4. I made no changes to the client package and find no hotfix's.

"Failed to install product key [hr=0xC004F050]"

I never used this process for the product key. I have a script that runs afterward.

Wait for network init: Completed with hr=0x80004005

Isn't 80004005 access denied? So this saying access denied to?

KB2905002 should be included in CU4, so you dont need to install it. CU1, CU2, CU3 is also included in CU4.

Are you sure that you checked the Network Card Drivers in the Bootimage? You Need 8.1 Drivers, because the Bootimage is Windows 8.1 in your Version.

If not:

- Copy the Base Bootimage without any Drivers

- Add only the Network Driver you need

I had a similar Issue with all Devices which have an Intel I217-LM Network Adapter installed.

The only Thing that worked was to remove all I217-LM Drivers (DELL) from the Bootimage and add the latest Drivers from the Intel Homepage.
