SMS agent host service is getting stopped automatically everyday after server backup (Not SCCM backup)
From last few days I noticed the SMS agent host service is getting stopped automatically everyday at 5AM which puts our management point down. When I checked event viewer then I noticed SMS agent service is getting stopped everyday immediately after server backup task NT backup at 4:55 AM. As per my understanding in our infrastructure all server are backed up every day. But I am wondering how this problem started all of sudden. (This server was working fine since 2 years).also in event viewer, while NT backup is in progress I can also see many events related to Volume shadow copy service. So it confirms me that NT backup is using VSS service. However When I tried to start the SMS agent service manually it will start and stop again immediately. After spending few time I found SMS agent service got started only after restarting WMI service also. After NT backup Mpcontrol.log says -- Http test request failed, error code is 12152. After NT backup Ccmexec.log says Error registering hosted class '{E67DBF56-96CA-4e11-83A5-5DEC8BD02EA8}'. Code 0x80040154 and System task 'StatusAgentInitialization' returned error code 0x8004106c. This is a sccm secondary server(4.00.6487.2000)..i tried couple of reboot but still no luck.. How are I proceed further.

My first question is why are you backing up with NT backup, what folders and why? The main site should be backed up with the ConfigMgr maintenance task but there is nothing really else you need to backup. You can backup the profiles or other items. I would see if you can get an exclusion or turn it off. http://www.sccm-tools.com http://sms-hints-tricks.blogspot.com

For NT backups if VSS is enabled check if you have free disk space to make a VSS copy. If there is not enough free space on the drive you can direct VSS to go to another volume. If SMS agent host service is stopping after starting it , It might be a WMI issue and would need fixing WMI. SMS agent host service is client server SMS executive controls the SCCM server. If there no others roles on secondary site there is no point backuping secondary site OS. Restore option for SCCM are only available for Primary site

We are using NTbackup for all servers as per our disaster recovery process and unfortunately we cant turn it off .so that if server hard disk crashes then we will have the option to recover the entire data like (sccm packages, user profiles and shared data, etc). since this is a secondary sccm server we didnt configured any sccm site backup maintaince task. Today also "SMS agent host service got stopped " at 5 AM after NT backup.the server was working fine from last 2 years with out any problem after NTbackup.I am wondering how this problem started and how can troubleshoot further. Due to this every day some one from monitering team has to manullay restart WMI service and then SMS agent host service manually. Please help how can i proceed further.

Sometimes the KBs don't fully describe everything that they address or fix. Not saying this will address everything you are seeing either, but it is defintiely on my list of must have fixes along with a handful of others; if the client has no other hotfixes, I highly recommend you go through the list of post-SP2 hotfixes and install ones that are applicable to their environment: http://blog.configmgrftw.com/?page_id=261. Other critical ones include 978021, 981797, 982399, and 2489044. For new deployments, I typically install nearly all of them actually.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com | Twitter @JasonSandys

The other thing to consider with the ConfigMgr backup is that it will back up ConfigMgr specific settings which might not be contained in a straight file-based backup. See this for more information about the backup task and the types of information included in backup: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb694133.aspx Dave Randall [MSFT]- Dave
