SMS 2003 decommision to SCCM 2007 install
Hi all, I looked through similar post before posting this and could not find the same situation I am in, so I apologize in advance if there is something out there that explains this. I am in the process of planning on going from SMS 2003 to SCCM 2007. The catch though is our SMS 2003 has been so mismanaged that we are thinking of just doing a fresh start on a new server (server 2008, SQL 2008) to SCCM 2007. My confusion with this process is how to assign clients to the new SCCM site and install clients to the new site once it is in place? My confusion with this has to do with the clients still having the SMS 2003 software and being assigned to the old site and you go about getting them switched over with the least amount of interference. My other question is how to decommission the old 2003 site and when to do it during the process. Do you just quit advertising to AD on the old site and take of the boundary (which we only have one) and attach the boundary to the new site. I will give you a run down on our current setup. 1 Primary site (SMS 2003) (SQL 2005) We want to go to SCCM 2007 on a new server we have setup that is running SQL 2008. We will then rebuild the collections, distribution points, packages, advertisements, etc. One other thing prohibiting me from just trying some of this out is that we do not have a test environment, we have 4 test machines, but they are on the same network, so really the only thing I could test out is pushing the new client install. I was under the impression though that I can only have one of these sites running at once because the new one will be a primary as well and the one site boundary we have is already assigned to the SMS 2003 site. Is this correct? Because if I could turn on AD advertising and assign it to that same boundary, I could then do some testing to the 4 test machine, without effecting the SMS 2003 site, if I am thinking correctly. What would be the most helpful is if someone could give me a rundown on how they might go through this process, or atleast answer the questions I outlined above. I appreciate the assistance and please let me know if you need any more information! -Scott

Just a side note: either you've got experience in such migration scenarios OR a testlab. The will avoid major issues in a production environment. You can basically follow this procedure I described here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrsetup/thread/4d4315c8-ce24-4b7e-a4df-f1feefcf3812. It doesn't matter if you're migrating from SMS or ConfigMgr to ConfigMgr. The only thing that changes is: advertise the ConfigMgr SP2 client to all SMS clients; it will be upgraded automatically and reassigned during this process.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

Thanks for the info. Let me run this by you and see if it is a good idea, I have read it in other threads. What if I were to use the CCMCLEAN.EXE from the SMS 2 toolkit. Could I use it to remove the client software? Does it remove the assignments to the SMS 2003 site as well? I thought it did? Could I use it to remove the clients from the 2003 site, then turn on AD advertising add the AD-default-site boundary to the new SCCM (after removing from 2003 of course) and then push a package with the new SCCM site which would give the clients the new software. Pretty much a process like this. 1.) Install SQL and SCCM on the new server (already done) 2.) Use the CCMCLEAN tool to remove software and assignments from client to the SMS 2003 primary site. 3.) Turn off AD advertising and remove the AD-default-site boundary we are using, which would effectively decommission the SMS 2003 site? 4. enable AD advertising and add the boundary to the new SCCM 2007 site. 5. Push client package to clients 6. Begin building collections, distribution points, advertisements, etc. for the new site. Please let me know if there is anywhere I am not thinking correctly above? I appreciate all of the info.
