SCOM Server Reboot Hierarchy
I want to know how would i plan reoot of the SCOM Servers: (No Ad integartion is enabled and we dont plan on it as of now) 1) If i have 1 RMS and 1 MS - All agents are reporting to MS. Situation is Need to Reboot RMS What will happen if i reboot RMS. Will my entire SCOM Env be Down for the time until it comes back up. Is there a way to keep the Env working even if i have to reboot RMS without Promoting the MS to RMS. In all if my RMS is Down -- Is the Entire Monitoring down (i hope no) but logically thinking i think it might be as RMS ahs access to DB and Console only works if RMS works. 2)Situation is i have 1 RMS and 1 MS Need to reboot my MS as i patched it or for any other reason, How do i prevent the agents from failing over to my RMS as i am confident that my MS will be back up in a minute. 3)Situation is i have 1 RMS and 2 MS I need to reboot 1 MS , will the agents fail to to the 2nd MS automatically or fail to RMS. How does the failover really works.

Hi This article gives you a detailed list of the impact of failure \ losing a particular component: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540400.aspx 1) If you are rebooting the RMS then this shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes. So you will lose some functionality - console access \ notifications \ config updates - but this won't stop monitoring by the agents or the functionality of the Secondary MS. If you need High Availability then you'll need to cluster the RMS. 2) and 3) Anders discusses agent failover here - http://contoso.se/blog/?p=160 - agents won't immediately failover to the RMS. And if they do (if the MS takes a long time to come back up) then they will automcatically fail back. It is possible to use PShell scripts to configure which Management Servers agents failover to (so you could in theory prevent an agent failing over to an RMS) but these need to be used with care as the potential is there to orphan an agent from any Management Servers. It is generally not recomended to make these changes unless your management group has thousands of agents. http://www.systemcentercentral.com/BlogDetails/tabid/143/IndexID/19791/Default.aspx Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/
