SCOM Hardware Requierments
Hello, A way to establish the Hardware requirements of SCOM is based on the Number of Agents (Operations Manager 2007 R2 Sizing Helper Tool v1 3.xls) but how does the Number of MP ( the number of detected applications in your environment ) and the number of Alerts/Events/Performance data is related to this dimension? Is there a way to Calculate the Required Hardware in relation to the MP; how may components are detected by that MP and related to the number of alerts/events/performance data? Thank you in advanced,

Hi I personally don't find the Sizing Tool a great help. There are too many variables for a formula to cover all eventualities. Additionally, the configuration of SQL Server has a huge bearing on performance so ideally RAID 10 for the data files, RAID 1 for the log files, data and log files (along with tempdb) on seperate physical spindles and away from the OS and paging files. I've tried to group some useful articles here: http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/category/hardware-recomendations/ As usual, Kevin Holmans blog is also a great source of useful material. I'd personally use the Sizing Tool as a starting guide and then monitor database sizes after that. Customisation is the big variable - shortening the frequency of data collection \ monitoring network devices \ creating new management packs to monitor in-house applications. This might also help: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735402.aspx Cheers Graham View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Could you describe your environement ? Number of agents needed ? your scom servers, it will be physical or virtual ? Do you need to monitor servers in a dmz ? Do you plan to put in place extended monitoring (Like Veeam Nwors for Vmware, Netapp monitoring, ....) ? Do you have more than one site ? What are the link between the site ?Christopher Keyaert - My OpsMgr/SCOM blog : http://www.vnext.be

One exemple of a actual enviroment used for monitoring External Clients: SCOM are Physical Servers -18GW Servers with a total of 600Agents Edit : 2 MS Servers: where the GW send Data + another 200 Agents that send the data Directly -MP: Citrix,Dell,Fujitsu,HP,IBM,Exchange 2003/2007;Lync;SQL;SCCM;AD;Cluster;DNS;IIS;Window Server; OCS; + some custom rules How can you calculate something like this? Hi Adrian, I think you can also refer to this document: Mapping Requirements to a Design for Operations Manager 2007 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735402.aspx Hope this can give you some hints. Hi I generally calculate size by experience - it isn't a precise calculation. One question - why 18 Gateway Servers for just 600 Agents? http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/2009/11/30/gateway/ Also - what do you mean by 2 x RMS .. how many management servers are there? As a final note - this thread might be of interest: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagergeneral/thread/303b671e-3a26-486c-988e-2f8d7bd53c88 Cheers Graham View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Sorry written wrong 2 X MS ; and one single management Group 18 GW because there are 23 small Companies in with no trust relations and in general no direct conectivity..... Thank you for the link`s Davies, but appears like you told and also like I was thinking before writing this post... there is no formula because the SCOM is to complex ( to many variables) Thank also Nicholas but sadly those one are the same one with Operations Manager 2007 R2 Sizing Helper Tool v1 3.xls and i have read that page many times :)

As far as "sizing hardware based on MP's imported and the load they generate" that's a very difficult problem that we've tried to solve in the past with not that much success. What we have done is captured data from real production customers environments and modeled that in our tests. In many cases, we took what was observed and increased it to get us a bit more confidence. Then we ran tests and collected data that is fed into the Sizing Helper v1.3 that you've looked at. We tried to make the sizer simple and generic enough for most customers' needs. To summarize, the Sizer should work for most customers by just looking at the number of Agents the customer is monitoring. If you feel that you have some specialized requirements (I want to collect one billion performance samples per day for 1000 agents) feel free to submit a question on the forum and we'll help guide you to the correct configuration.
