SCOM 2012 Network Monitoring Does Not Show Servers
We are testing out the network monitoring piece in SCOM 2012 but for some reason it never does show the servers. We have a test switch with a monitored server connected directly to it but after the discovery completes it doesn't show the server as being connected. The switch in question is a Juniper and if you look at the diagram view for the device it does show all of the ports under "not monitored" and the Processor and Memory under "Healthy." The following event sequence shows up in the "Network Discovery Progress Events" view: Full Discovery Started for 1 request(s) Proceeding to discover all systems in repository Probing <<IP Address 1>> Probing <<IP Address 2>> Probing completed for <<IP Address 2>> PostProcessing started Probing completed for <<IP Address 1>> PostProcessing completed Switch::<<IP Address 2>> discovered successfully Switch::<<IP Address 1>> discovered successfully Discovery Completed / Devices discovered: 2 / Windows computers filtered: 0 / Devices in pending list: 0 / Devices excluded: 0 No devices were found in filtered list after discovery Start processing connections to computers Finished processing connections to computers. Number of connections made: 0 I've been trying to find some documentation on any other settings that are required to get network monitoring to work as advertised but so far I have struck out. Help!

Unfortunately that didn't seem to help, I still don't see any servers in the "Network Vicinity Dashboard" for the switch and I know that there is a server that is monitored by SCOM plugged directly into it.

Hi Matt Does the server have a scom agent installed? Only windows servers with SCOM agents installed will be displayed. Cheers GrahamRegards Graham New System Center 2012 Blog! - http://www.systemcentersolutions.co.uk View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Yes it does and I just checked the agent and it's showing Healthy.

Sorry Matt - you did say that very clearly in your previous post. I'll try and do better this time ;-) From here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212935.aspx From here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/09/20/what-gets-monitored-with-system-center-operations-manager-2012-network-monitoring.aspx "An agent computer that is directly connected to a device will have the connecting interface added to this group. For this to work the management group must have the Windows Operating System management pack for the agents operating system, the Windows Client Network Discovery management pack and the Windows Server Network Discovery management pack. The full discovery of the agents operating system has to be completed including the discovery of the agents network adapters. Then when network discovery runs for the device it should stitch the port on the device to the network adapter on the computer and add the port to this group." So possibly: - check the management packs specified are imported - check the the agents network adapters have been discovered From here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212935.aspx - it is also possible to do this for non-scom monitored servers. "Ports that are connected to a computer are not monitored; only ports that connect to other network devices are monitored. You can monitor a port that is connected to a computer that is not agent-managed in the same management group by adding the port to the Critical Network Adapters Group." The server I'm trying to get to show up is a Server 2008 R2 SP1 box and I do have the Windows Server 2008 Operating System (Discovery & Monitoring) MPs installed. If I do a state view showing computer network adapters I do find the one that is in that particular box but it's status is "not monitored". (All of the network adapters show up that way.) I tried adding the computer's network adapter to the "Critical Network Adapters" group but it didn't seem to make any difference. I have also manually enabled port monitoring on the port it's plugged into and that didn't change anything either. The server's IP is on a different subnet than the management interface for the switch. I hope this isn't causing the issue!

A different subnet shouldn't matter. All of our adapters are healthy so that is probably the issue. Make sure someone hasn't turned off monitoring of the network adapters via an override. If you right click an adapter and go to health explorer there are a couple of monitors you can drill down to: Availability --> Network Interface Monitor Performance --> Percent Bandwidth Used total Check the overrides summary for these to see if there is an override in place. Also check whether they are enabled. Is this something that would be disabled by default? This is a fresh install of SCOM 2012 and I'm the only one that's been in there. I suppose it's possible I disabled it. Here's what the health explorer looks like.

Actually now that I look at it when I drill down from Microsoft Windows Server -> Health Monitoring -> Network Adapter Health and open the health explorer from there I get something that looks exactly like you said.

hi matt is the juniper swich listed in the supported devices? If not a monitor for getting specific interface data from this switch might not available. hope this helps.

Under "Certification" it does say "CERTIFIED". I understood that this meant it was supported - is that not necessarily the case?
August 24th, 2012 12:27pm

Hi All devices that support SNMP \ ICMP are supported for basic up \ down monitoring - certified means that extra monitoring capabilities are available: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212728.aspx This will work for you with a non-certified device as I have a cisco switch in my lab which is not certified but which shows the servers attached to it. A couple more things: 1) Your initial error message does state - "Start processing connections to computers Finished processing connections to computers. Number of connections made: 0" which does indicate that there is a genuine problem. However, sorry to ask a basic question .. but just to make sure that we aren't missing something very obvious .. you are checking the box that states "show computers" in the vicinity view? 2) In Authoring, Groups, can you take a look at the members of the Managed Computer Network Adapters Group and see if there are any adapters in this group. 1) Yep, checked the 'show computers' box. 2) It doesn't show any objects in that group.

Hi "the diagram view for the device it does show all of the ports under 'not monitored' and the Processor and Memory under 'Healthy'." The fact that the processor and memory is healthy confirms the device is discovered and certified. Although being certified is not necessary for this to work. The ports should detect the agent automatically and go monitored - so this is where the problem lies. 1) What type of discovery have you done? ICMP and \ or SNMP v2 or this an SNMP v3 device? 2) If you know the port that one of the computers is plugged into, can you add that port to the Critical Network Adapters Group and see if that is detected. Just double check my lab and I have both Hyper-V and VMWare 4 \ 5 guests as well as hosts working fine and it hasn't required any changes to default settings. Also have a cluster with NIC teaming working fine. 1) I did the SNMP (v1 or v2) and ICMP discovery. This is not a v3 device. 2) I was given the port information by networking and I have added it to the "Critical network Adapters Group". Do I need to run the discovery again after this?

With regard to 2) I think so. If it helps to speed things up, drop me a line at grahamDOTdaviesATakcslDOTcom (replacing DOT and AT appropriately). I can't help but think we are missing something obvious but can look to get some other assistance if needed. Hello. I have possible the same problem. I have two Junipes devices: switch EX4200-48T and router J2350 . Discovery is OK, both devices are CERTIFIED. Each connected to other. But I dont see port\interface monitoring and windows servers (with SCOM agent) connected to the switch. There are No errors in OM log. But if I manually enable monitoring ports (by "Enable Port Monitoring") then ports became healthy monitored. May be this bug for Juniper ?

Hi But if I manually enable monitoring ports (by "Enable Port Monitoring") then ports became healthy monitored. Do you also then see the windows servers (that have agents deployed) in the Network vicinity dashboard? Hi all, I just want to know if SCOM 2012 can manage juniper log files centrally. Thanks.
