SCOM 2012 Network Discovery for Generic Devices
Hi, I've just setup SCOM and added some networking devices. All devices are not in the list of the extended monitor capability, so I am not surprised to see all them as "generic". BTW the problem is thta the devices remain as "not monitored" I just wondering how to switch them ad monitored at leat for ICMP and/or SNMP ping. Any help is kindly appreciated! Further to my previous post, keep in mind that the ping from the SCOm server works for those devices and I am able to retrieve some SNMP information like location, etc. within SCOM but the item is still "not monitored"Christian Parmigiani

Hi Christain - Can you post what you see in the Administration space, Network Management, Discovery Rules. What does it say in each column? And when you look at the Network Devices Pending Management node, what do you see, particullarly in the "Reason" column? John Joyner MVP-SC-CDM

Hi, Thanks for your follow up. Administration space, Network Management, Discovery Rules Pending device is empty. On network device I see all them as generic (which is Ok for me) but "Not monitored": Thanks C.Christian Parmigiani

Hi Christian - Thanks, but still I am hoping to see what is listed at this node: "Network Devices Pending Management". Another tip is to change from Explicit to Recursive on the discovery, recursive is much more effective and desired setting unless there is a positive reason not to use recursive as the discovery method. (This does not mean you must monitor all discovered devices, but it is better to discover a few core devices like core switch and backbone routers and let recurive discovery find the network devices.)John Joyner MVP-SC-CDM

Hi Christian Can you please check the security rights of the scom accounts (RunAs, DWWA, etc)? The SCOM RunAs Account should have logon as a service, logon as a batch job, and generate security audits in the user right assignements in the Computer's local security policy. Andrea
