SCOM 2012: Monitoring Storage Hardware (Additional SCOM Servers ??)
We're going to deploy SCOM 2012 to monitoring 300 windows computers (Lync, Exchange,Hyper-V, SCCM, Windows Server,
Internet Information Services (IIS)-hosted .NET applications,etc...). So, we are goint to deploy two MS Servers (8/16GB + 2/4 CPUs). Based on "System Center 2012 Operations Manager
Sizing Helper Tool v1.xls"
My questions are:
1) Is good my design?
2) Do I need addtional servers to monitor 30 .net web/application servers (APM) ??
3) Do I need addtional servers to monitor Storage Hardware (array disks, cabs, etc..)
4) At this moment we do need to monitor
network routers and switches....but Do I need plus servers if i want to do it??
Thanks

Hi carlosdlra:
Two management servers as you described will have no trouble monitoring 300 windows computers. I assume there is a SQL server involved with your SCOM deployment you didn't mention yet, i.e. SQL is not installed on one of the management servers, just wanted
to confirm.
If your design is two management servers and one or more external SQL server instances that is good design for 300 servers to monitor.
You asked about 3 other things:
1. Do you need more management servers to monitor 30 servers with APM. (Answer: No)
2. Do you need more management servers to monitor Storage Hardware. (Answer: Don't understand please provide more information)
3. Do you need to monitor servers "plus" network routers and switches? (Please confirm I understand this question.)

Just to add one question to Johns ask for a couple of clarifications:
Do you need to monitor any servers outside of the forest that the core SCOM servers are deployed to?
If so, are these servers in workgroups or in untrusted domains?

Hi
1) We have a SQL Server Cluster. Also,we're going to deploy a SQL Reporting Server to SCOM Reporting
2) We have additional domains, but forest trusted exists... so, i think we don't have problem to monitor these objects.... no??
3) I'd like to monitor HP/Dell Arrays... I supposed that there are specific Managament Pack.... but... Does this monitoring consume to much??
4) At this moment we don't want to monitor routers ans switches.... but perhaps on the future.....

Hi Carlosdlra:
1. Sounds like your SQL situation is A-OK!
2. Monitoring resources in domains trusted or untrusted is totally OK! If you don't have domain trust you use SCOM gateway with certificates. No problem to monitor objects in other domains.
3. There are specific management packs from HP and Dell for their storage equipment. In an environment of your size that additional monitoring will not have a bad impact overall.
4. With SCOM 2012 you can add monitoring for routers and switches in the future, not required you monitor those right away.

Thanks John
It's increible !!! If use "Operations Manager 2007 R2 Sizing Helper Tool v1 3" the requirement is two MS with 4 GB + 2 CPU, but If I Use "System Center 2012 Operations Manager Sizing Helper Tool v1" the requirement is two MS with 16GB + 4CPU
I suppose that I'll use two MS with 2 CPU + 4-8GB (dynamic). If I need more resources, I can add plus CPU and/or Memory...
With "System Center 2012 Operations Manager Sizing Helper Tool v1", if I disable APM, the result is 2 x (4 CPU + 8 GB), but If I enable APM with 50 servers, it up to 16 GB. It's increible !!!

For Dell Servers, you can use Dell Server Management Pack Suite 5.0.1 for monitoring Servers and Chassis.
For Dell Storage Arrays, you can choose to monitor hardware using one of the following management packs:
- EqualLogic Management Pack Suite 4.1 for EqualLogic PS-Series Arrays
- MD Storage Array Management Pack Suite for MD Storage Arrays (MD3xxx series arrays)
- Compellent Management Pack for Compellent storage.
You get all of above from the support.dell.com or Microsoft Pinpoint server.
Thank you
