SCOM 2007 R2 Notification Subscriptions for a Distributed Application
Hi, I have SCOM 2007 R2 installed and I have created some Distributed Applications. For each Application I have done 2 major things: Created a View that shows all active alerts for the Applciation Created a Notification Subscription that will alert subscribers The example Details of the Views set are as follows: Criteria->Show data related to: (Sample Distributed Application) Criteria->with specific resolution state: (New (0)) The View works well and I see all the active alerts for the Distributed Application. However I don't get corresponding Notification Emails with the Notification Subscription configured as follows for example: Criteria->raised by any instance of a specific class: (Sample Distributed Application) Some alerts are sent out via email but others only exisit in the SCOM Console and were not sent out. Troubleshooting Completed I verified that the mail relay is working correctly. If I manually add all components of the Distributed Application to the Criteria of the Notification Subsription then I get all Alerts in my email as expected. If I Add Groups to the Notification Subscriptions then I do not get all Email Notificaitons. Any advice on this is appreciated, I could just be missing something simple! P.S. I am assuming that I will catch all Applicaiton alerts by simply putting the Distributed Application in Class criteria for the Notification Subscription.

Hi MasterD :-) You could try the raised by an instance with a specific name option. I think that what you are seeing now is only alerts comming from that specific distributed app, but only on that level and not all components below it. So the source of the alert would be the name of that DA. You are right that the DA does not show up in the group option, so you can not use that one (except if you create a group and place all objects you want (same as the DA designer basically) in that group and target that one in the notification subscription. But that would be a workaround.Bob Cornelissen - BICTT (My BICTT Blog)

Thanks for the Reply Bob, As you suggested, I tried with the specific name option specifying the DA as the criteria but no luck. The notifications did not come through :(. My workaround is to add the DA and all the components below to the Notification Subscription. This works but it is not as clean and structured as the rest of my implementation. I was hoping there was a better way! What you are saying makes sense I can see that the source on the notificaitons that are not sent to the email have no reference to the DA! I am still wondering though, why would the alert go into the console View only and not to the Email? The filter is basically the same? Damian (AKA MasterD (Gamertag):))

Hi Damian, Next to the things I already proposed (including making a group and placing the objects in there) or trying some other way to target the notification, you could also use Savision Live Maps to make your DA on a map. This "secretly" also creates a group that contains the objects and thus you can target that in a notification channel and it looks great too :-) (there is a 5 view free version available as well). And of course there is the workaround you have found already by placing all the objects you need in the subscription. Well the view filter picks up anything in the levels below as well. When you choose a group in the subscription it will also contain anything below it, however it seems to pick only the class itself in the subscription if you select the class filter there.Bob Cornelissen - BICTT (My BICTT Blog)

Thanks Bob, I was away for a few Days and just got to your response. I had a look at the Live Maps and it appears to have other features that I can use so I am exploring it further. My question is anwered! Damian
