I am looking into SMS notifications and from what I am finding it looks like I have to buy a modem?!? I'm curious if this is really the case. We have Exchange 2010 deployed and are using SMS notifications with it, yet we did not have to purchase any hardware to do so. I am guessing it is using web based API calls to the various US cellular providers to do SMS messaging. How do I go about enabling SCOM 2007 R2 to do the same?? Thanks.

My guess is that on your exchange you are using the SMTP addresses to send the text messages (SMS) i.e phonenumber@txt.att.net (http://www.notepage.net/smtp.htm)... You will need hardware if you want to use the SMS setting.... Basically the modem is a cell phone that sens the SMS message.Len Havron

Len Havron I was able to get notifications working the same way Exchange does it by sending to the SMTP address of our cellular phones. It works great and saved us money in not having to purchase a modem.
