SCCM updates: User Experience - Reboot notifications

Hi all,

Just a quick one. I wanted to confirm the process when the deadline is reached on a Software Updates deployment with 'display in software center and show all notifications' selected. I'm asking the question as I want to know whether the large 'temporary notification reboot window' should automatically show or it only shows if the users clicks the 'your computer requires a restart' system tray balloon?

Process:

  1. System tray balloon appears saying 'software changes are required'
  2. System tray balloon appears saying 'downloading and installing software'
  3. System tray balloon appears saying 'Restart required: Recently installed updates require your machine to be restarted'
  4. *It is here I would like the larger temporary notification reboot window to appear but it doesn't - can I get this to show automatically?
  5. Permanent notification reboot window appears and stays on the screen

From testing my thoughts are that point 4. isn't possible. Without this it seems quite easy for users to miss seeing the balloon and therefore not know that a restart is coming. I think in order to make the pending restart notice more visible I need to find out how to change the system tray behavior for 'SCNotification' to 'show icon and notification' instead of 'show notification only' - does anyone know?

Any other ideas for alerting users to pending restarts? I've got a 10 hour temporary window so users may go home at night and leave work open only for the reboot to happen then.

I've found this blog useful:

Thanks as always - great forum!

Is there a way to set the SCNotification.exe in Control Panel > Notification Area Icons to be 'Show icons and notifications' from 'Only show notifications' though? Can't find any information on a registry hack or Group Policy setting.

At least with that settings when there' s a reboot pending there will be highlighted slightly more to the user.

I'm asking as the users have complained that they easily miss notifications of updates being installed and any temporary reboot warnings

Yes, I know this is an old post, but Im trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?

No luck with this. I don't think it is possible to force the temporary notification window to show. Also, I've only found a setting to 'show icons and notifications' for all or none, not just for SCNotification.exe. In the meantime I have created a User Guide with directions of how users can change settings manually themselves.

I've posted on the suggestions page Peter suggested.
