SCCM patch not reaching the Client

Hello All,

I am facing issue in patch deployment. Here is my case story.

I have one primary site. DP, SUP and FSP is configured in another servers which hosts the WSUS too. I am able to sync updates with SUP, create software update group and corresponding deployment package. Updates are getting downloaded to shared location (Every one has full control on this share). My package is getting distributed to DP, I can see the content status as successful and the one .ini file in the name of Package ID is present is PakageLib too.

But still this is not getting deployed on my client machine. Here is what all the logs says:

Hello,

Concur with Peter, you can verify if content is distributed successfully via distmgr.log.

In addition, check you boundary group setting, make sure you have DPs avaliable for boundary group.

I came to this conclusion because I could find an .Ini file in PackageLib with the same name as that of Package ID. But when am opening it, I could see only the GUID names of downloaded patches. Its not having any info like Content_GUID which use to be there for application deployment.

Attached the logs from Distmgr.log in below comment.

Is my packages really not reaching DP..? Any idea.?

Raised a case with Microsoft and got this sorted out and now patch flows freely. Below explains how MS sorted this out. Hope it may help some in future.

  • Enabled verbose logging on the client and came across the following error

CScanAgent::ScanByUpdates- Added Policy to final ScanRequest List UpdateSourceID={AA3D21FB-01AC-4E92-A3FF-A038E1628EB0}, Policy-ContentVersion=8, Required-ContentVersion=54       ScanAgent                06/02/2015 06:00:48        3296 (0x0CE0)

  • This can occur if the ContentVersion of the site is less than the ContentVersion stored on the clients. This usually happens when a site is restored with an old backup.
  • When a client sends a WSUS server location request, it sends the required Content version in the location request.
  • The MP looks in to the WSUSServerLocations table in the database to find a WSUS server which has Content version greater than or equal to client's required content version.
  • When a site is restored with old backup, the content version on the DB is less, so the clients do not get a WSUS location reply and they get stuck in AssignmentStateDetecting.
  • In order to fix the issue we need to find the highest content version on the site. To do this, run the following query on the top level site in the hierarchy

select * from CI_UpdateCIs order by MinSourceVersion desc

  • Look at the MinSourceVersion field to find the highest content version of the site. In our case the value was 73
  • Then run the following query to see if the ContentVersion is less than the client's required version

select * from wsusserverlocations

  • The value was 8 which was less than what the client was requesting
  • We then stopped the SMS_Executive service
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_WSUS_SYNC_MANAGER
  • Change the values of ContentVersion, Synctoversion and lastattemptversion to a value which is higher than the highest content version of the site. (75)
  • Start the SMS_Executive service and run a sync on the top level site.
  • Once the sync completed, the Contentversion on the WSUSServerLocations table become 76.
  • Now the WSUS location request from any clients was returned with the proper WSUS server.
  • The clients were then able to download and install the updates successfully.

Vishnu,

Can you be more specific about how to run those queries? I have, it seems, the same problem and I am not very good with queries. I have tried to create a new query in Monitoring area of my SCCM 2012 server but I keep getting invalid view.

Thanks,

Mike
