SCCM manage VPN Clients
Could SCCM 2007R2 manage VPN clients? when client use VPN to connect to corp host, SCCM could send patch and collect SW/HW inventory?

If the client is already installed on a PC, yes it can be used to deploy SU and collection SW/HW inv. when connected via VPN.http://www.enhansoft.com/

Yes, VPN client will get treated as a normal client from SCCM perspcive. As VPN clients are already connected to your coorperate network and have access to all the SCCM servers in the environment.
However, you may need to ensure that VPN boundaries are added to respective site server, as a SLOW link.Anoop C Nair - Twitter @anoopmannur

If the VPN client has no SCCM agent, and did not join AD, could SCCM still manage this client?

In that case, You need to install SCCM client. And if the systems are not in domain you can treat them as workgroup clients
