SCCM database temp log size requirement
I've upgraded our central site to SCCM 2007 R2 SP2 and we are going to be upgrading our 3500 clients via software distribution. Currently the database is approximately 2.5 gig and the temp DB log is 600 meg and is set to a restricted file autogrowth of 2.5 gig. If an SCCM client takes up 5 meg in the database I can expect the database to grow to about 17 gig. Is the temp DB size relative to the main SCCM database size or something else? Should I remove the autogrowth restriction on the temp DB prior to the upgrade?

TempDB is relative to database activity and the design of the database: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190768.aspx. Data held in TempDB is volatile and variable and has no relation in size to any other DB. There really is no way to estimate how big the TempDB will get without knowing internals of the databases themselves: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345368.aspx. Mass updates to data in the database will cause it to balloon temporarily so you should plan for this. I would definitely remove the autogrowth restriction or at least cap it relative to the amount of disk space that you have available. For long term use, your should profile your TempDB to determine whether you should cap it or not.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

Your SCCM database is only 2.5 Gb? Mine is over 10 times that for only double the number of clients you have. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum |

Thanks, Jason. I'll remove the restriction and monitor during our deployment. - Chris.

The majority of the 3500 clients are still running SMS 2003. I'm expecting the database size to increase to around 17 gig once they're upgraded.
