SCCM USMT4 hard-link ALL DATA
Hi,I would like to deploy Windows 7 and then restore ALL DATA (not just profile, my documents etc). I'm a bit unsure about how to do this.I understand that i have to add these Task Sequence Variables to enable hard-link migration. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee344267.aspxDo i also need to specify ALL data in the MigUser.XML file or does hard link migration do this by default? What do i need to do toin SCCM tomake sure no data is lost on the PC?

Hi,At the beginning of your TS you need to set a couple of variables through the option Add and choose General\Set Task Sequence Variable:Name the1st one: Set Local State Location with the variable OSDStateStorePath with value %_SMSTSUserStatePath% (this is where the files will be stored, the value can also be a custom folder)Name the 2nd one: Set Hard-link Scan Parameters with the variable OSDMigrateAdditionalCaptureOptions with value /hardlink /nocompressName the 3th one: Set Hard-link Load Parameters with the variable OSDMigrateAdditionalRestoreOptions with value /Hardlink /nocompressNext step is to add a 'Capture User State' step through the option Add and choose User State\Capture User State. In this step you specify the USMT 4.0 package and choose the option 'customize how user profiles are captured' now you can specify custom xml files to control what is captured or not.Not sure what you mean with all data, this is different for each user. Maybe you have a special data folder or location, maye you want shortcuts and favorites. When you open the xml files of the USMT you see what is captured by default. USMT is very flexible about extending of skipping data to be captured.See also:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680924.aspx Follow me through my blog and Twitter!

So even with hardlink migration i need to specify exaclty which files are copied? (Wasn't sure if the mig.. xml files stillnecessarywith hard-link migration)Can you migrate all of C:\ ?<migration urlid="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/test"><component type="Documents" context="System"> <displayName>Component to migrate all Engineering Drafts Documents including subfolders</displayName> <role role="Data"> <rules> <include> <objectSet> <pattern type="File">C:\* [*]</pattern> </objectSet> </include> </rules></role></component></migration>My users do not store files consistantly and are developers so it's not just a case ofcopying MS office files. I want to be sure thatthere is NO DATA LOSS in the Windows 7 deployement.

Hi,Well it depends on what you want to be migrated. It captures a lot by default but defenitly not everything on c:\. I would not recommend to capture everything on the C drive. Make a list with what you need and test what is captured from the list by default and what is not.Follow me through my blog and Twitter!

What should the variable OSDMigrateAdditionalCaptureOptions equal?should it be '%C:\MyLocalStateStore% /hardlink /nocompress' Or should it equal TRUE ? I do not have the "set HARDlink capture options" option as seen here http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/image.axd?picture=HardLinkTS.jpg

Set HardLink Capture Options is just the (display)name that I used for setting a Task Sequence Variable. In that step I set the variable OSDMigrateAdditionalCaptureOptions to /hardlink /nocompressMy Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/
