SCCM SP2 Upgrade
Hi we are on the way to upgrade our secondary servers from SMS 2003 to SCCM 2007 R2 SP2. An idot installed the SMS Adminconsole on some of the servers. The SCCM inplace upgrade worked and also installing R2 went fine. During the SCCM SP2 upgrade the prerequisite checker throws a lot of errors indicating that the setup was unable to detect the secondary server. After reading a couple of blogs installing the admin console on a secondary server is an unsupported scenario and deinstallation is not supported. Arrgh. Reinstall the secondary servers causes a lot work because we have a lot of secondary servers with admin console installed. It's a mess. I am looking for a procedure to either bypass the prerequisite checker or removing the admin console. I tried starting the update from the command line but I can't specify a path for the already downloaded components. The server has no internet connection! Any suggestion to proceed? Thanks in advance Joachim

Here's an overview about other unattended setup parameters: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693561.aspx

If I remember correctly something will break if you have the console on your secondary site servers. I don't recall what it was but I remember it being a problem for a good many people. It's unsupported to run the console on secondary sites too. If I were you I would uninstall the console from those sites before upgrading them. I do not recall that uninstalling it is unsupported. Where did you see that? John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum |

Where did you see that? Maybe here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693800.aspx (last paragraph). I also think that uninstalling the console does not work on secondaries IIRC (never tried it).

@Thorsten: It's a project. The console was installed before I was involved in the project. :-) @John: You can't uninstall only the console. There is no option to uninstall only the console but I'll give it a try as soon as I find another server. :-) The funny thing is SCCM 2007 SP1 run smoothly. Only during SP2 installation errors occur. We decided to use the command line approach. The correct command line is: setup.exe /Upgrade <path to external components> The last entry in the ConfigMgrSetup.log is <05-19-2010 08:58:35> Creating SMS Inbox Source registry key ... but the the correct version is reported and the site status is green and everything work as expected. We'll have more chances because round about 15 additional secondary server have to be updated. Hopefully no admin console is installed on these servers. Thanks all for your replies. Will keep you in loop. :-) Cheers

We upgraded all server with an admin console installed via the command line setup and the /upgrade switch. All servers are upgraded, up and running.
