SCCM SP2
ok, just to confirm my understanding of various SCCM versions/restrictions:
SP2 is in BETA right now and will not be RTM until 90 days after Windows 7 is released (which I thought was October)? so is there an expected date when SCCM SP2 will be GA?
To deploy Windows 7 and I believe Windows 2008 R2 I need SP2 for SCCM (unless I want to go through some other MDT 2010 and who knows what other things)?
I believe Deploying VISTA SP2 also requires SCCM SP2?
There is not path to upgrade to the GA SP2 if you choose to install the BETA SP2 to "test"?
So SP2 might be generally available around the end of January at which time we "suspect" we'll be able to deploy these various levels of operating systems?THANKS in advance for helping clarify

SP2 is in Beta at the moment. Expected release is up to 90 days after GA. Doesn't mean that it will take that long, but it can. You will need SP2 to deploy Win7 and 2008R2 in a supported fashion. Not sure about Vista SP2 however. It might be that you need ConfigMgr SP2 to see Vista SP2 in the OS restrictions on programs. There is not a support upgrade path from Beta to GA SP2 unless you have special permissions from Microsoft (TAP, EAP, etc....)

There are hotfixes available to deploy Vista SP2 and 2008 SP2 for both RTM and SP1 versions of SCCM. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970093 - SP1 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969991 - RTM There is no hotfix for Win7, I'm assuming because of how close MS is to releasing SP2.SCCMAdmins.com

Hi, 1. SCCM SP2 final version will be ready within 90 days after Windows 7 RTM. Everything depends on the customer feedback we get from the Beta though quality is the priority. 2. Yes, you need SCCM SP2 to deploy Windows 7. 3. You can use SCCM RTM or SP1 to deploy Windows Vista SP2, but you need to install hotfix, see Scott's reply. 4. You need to perform a reinstallation if you want to upgrade from SCCM SP2 BETA to SCCM SP2 RTM

Eric, got the email last night that SCCM SP2 RC is out. Do the same restrictions apply as the Beta or is there an upgrade path from RC to RTM? Thanks, Ken

The two answers here are conflicting. Is is RTM or GA + 90 Days? If its RTM (July 22nd) then SP2 should be out the same day as Win7 GA which would both make sense and be awesome. If its GA (Oct 22nd) + 90 Days then that is really going to put a hamper our on Windows 7 (and WS08 R2) deployments. Joe

It think it's GA (not RTM) + 90days, but you should also have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974236/en-us!

Torsten, that is just for patching and pushing software to Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. It doesnt say anything about deploying Windows 7 or server 2008 R2with SCCM. Dan - Can you elaborate on the script you wrote to allow deploying Windows 7 wims with SP1. How would one apply that to the task sequence? (Command Line?)James

It doesn't say anything about it so it's not supported ... See http://blogs.technet.com/systemcenter/archive/2009/09/16/clarifying-windows-os-support-and-configuration-manager-2007.aspxfor clarification.

There has definitely been a lot of confusion about which Windows 7 date to base the ConfigMgr SP2 release on...is it RTM or GA? I blogged the answer to this yesterday because of the confusion I saw on this thread.http://verbalprocessor.com/2009/10/07/configmgr-sp2-availability/Short answer is that SP2 is slated for 90 days after Win7 RTM...which would put it within the next couple of weeks. This was announced at MMS, and I have seen it confirmed from reliable sources since then.Above in this thread, Eriz Zhang posted the correct answer, but then he also marked two posts as the "answer"...one stating RTM+90, the other stating GA+90.Hopefully this clarifies the subject for others looking for the answer.

It is 90 days post RTM , not GA. So expect SP2 to be released this month!Wally Mead

I was told last week by a member of the SCCM Dev team that SCCM SP2 was going to be Released to Web (available for download) on 10/22 (in two days).SCCM SP2 brings support for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Vista SP2. There have been hotfixs that allow some support of these three operating systems, but this service pack brings full support.

Hi there - i have Just checked MVLS, and there's no SP2 awailable yet (october 22, 2009 - Danish time 10:51 AM) So i guess that we wil just have to keep checking in there every day - until some day we can get on with deploying the Win7 workstations... A service pack will also modify things in the database, that's why there's the option to test that part before the actual upgrade: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693648.aspx

On the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee344146.aspxit is said:The Windows AIK (version 1.0 for Configuration Manager 2007 or version 1.1 for Configuration Manager 2007SP1) must be uninstalled from the SMS Provider computer and the computer must be restarted before beginning the upgrade process. Does SP2 do this automaticly or do you have to do this manualy?

When we labbed the SP2 upgrade, it actually stopped and we had to go back and uninstall, this was the beta release though, not sure if anything has changed in the RTM.

I am trying to install SP2 in our lab. The pre-req checker runs thru and there are some warnings (which i am not to concerned about). When the prerequisite components tries to download I get the following"successfully downloaded all prerequisite components" I click OK and it stops with the error "Component manifest was not found".Any ideas guys?
Editran this command : from the bin folder setup.exe /download c:\downloads.Went thru, but when I start the upgrade again, I get the error "Component manifest was not found"

You really should start a new thread on this, instead of adding a totally unrelated question to an existing thread, especially with that thread having already been marked as answered. A lot of people stop looking at threads once marked answered.I'd do the download again. I've heard numerous cases where the downloaded fileshave been corrupted, and a subsequent download works fine.Wally Mead
