SCCM SP1 Installation PreReq error on SMS Provider Communication...
Same post into General - just in case...
Stuck on SMS Provider Communication Error, and the log file contain:
<11-07-2008 11:20:25> Could not open \\SMSSVR\admin$\sccm_sysroletosql_connect_test.rst.<11-07-2008 11:21:23> QC90990SC01; SMS Provider Communication; Error; A communication error has been detected between the SMS Provider computer and the site database computer. This error can occur when the site database server is offline or if a valid SPN has not been registered in Active Directory Domain Services for the SQL Server instance hosting the site database. Setup cannot continue.
The file does not exist...
And our SQL is located on another computer, so I specified setup /prereq /pri /sql <sqlserver>
And still having the problem....
Where this file is supposed to came from?
Thanks.

Could you look at the log file <System Drive>:\\smstsvc.log on a machine that you specified to install SMS Provider? (From the command line you specified in above, the SMS Provider was to be installed on Site Server.)The log file might have more information.

Check the ConfigMgrPrereq.log located in the root of your C drive.
Now I had an issue with this as well and the logfile helped me
Cannot Copy f:\smssetup\bin\smstsvc.exe to
\\sccm-cm1\admin$\sccm_sysroletosql_connect.exe , win32 error = 5
the file sccm_sysroletosql_conntect_test.exe file existed in the destination location, therefore the copy job failed. (the reason for this might have been my impatience when I did not wait for a "not responding" prereq process :-)
The solution was to delete the file and things were fine.
