SCCM PXE ISSUE: Computer Resource ID not repicated to child sites so no Boot Action assigned
Hello colleagues, We have an SCCM site topology of 1 parent site and 1 child site. This is our development environment. Im am in the process of implementing OSD, and as part of that, implementing WDS / SMS PXE. I added WDS to the (Windows Server 2003 X64 SP2) siteserver of the primary child site (called 1P1). The PXE role is functioning perfectly as long as the resource is existent in 1P1. When I add a new computer to SCCM (via 1C1\Computer Mgmt\OSD\Computer Association - Import Computer Information - Import Single Computer - next - Enter Computername and MAC address - next - next - Add new computers only to the following collection - browse - choose correct Collection that has TS advertised - Next - Finish) The pxeClients shows the pxeabort message and the smspxe.log shows: [145.219.246.108:67] Recv From:[010.101.211.253:68] Len:548 ab14d8 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:42 PM 2364 (0x093C) [145.219.246.108:67] Recv From:[010.101.211.254:68] Len:548 ab03c8 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:42 PM 2360 (0x0938) [145.219.246.108:67] Recv From:[010.101.211.254:68] Len:548 ab25e8 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2360 (0x0938) [145.219.246.108:67] Recv From:[010.101.211.253:68] Len:548 ab36f8 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2364 (0x093C) Ignoring req from [010.101.211.253:68] Dest Server:[010.068.088.006] smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2364 (0x093C) Ignoring req from [010.101.211.254:68] Dest Server:[010.068.088.006] smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2360 (0x0938) [145.219.246.108:4011] Recv From:[010.101.210.002:68] Len:548 2d4f9b8 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2360 (0x0938) [145.219.246.108:4011] Recv From:[010.101.210.002:68] Len:303 2d50ac8 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2360 (0x0938) Getting boot action for unknown machine: item key: 4 smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2788 (0x0AE4) Executing GetBootAction(4, SRVx) smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2788 (0x0AE4) No Boot Action for Device (4) found smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2788 (0x0AE4) ProcessDatabaseReply: No Advertisement found in Db for device smspxe 2/16/2011 4:53:50 PM 2788 (0x0AE4) The unknown computer (X64) has resource ID 4, so indeed the machine is not recocnized. The collection in 1C1 shows the new computer record, but the collection in 1P1 does not (which seems logical). But this makes the PXE server point think the machine is unknown. When I place the new computer record in 1P1 (via the forementioned procedure, but now in 1P1), the PxE client recieves its bootfiles: [145.219.246.108:4011] Recv From:[010.101.210.002:68] Len:548 2cadbf8 smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:57 PM 3876 (0x0F24) [145.219.246.108:4011] Recv From:[010.101.210.002:68] Len:303 2caed08 smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 4660 (0x1234) Executing GetBootAction(4281, SRVx) smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) vLastPXEAdvertisementID is NULL smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) vLastPXEAdvertisementTime: 16/02/2011 15:53:25 smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) GetBootAction: MAC:00:21:70:AD:11:88 SMBIOS: SMSID:GUID:9B43949C-4A90-4FEB-B6C4-FF8536A5B975 LastAdv: smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) Advertisement results: OfferId:1C120036 OfferTime:31/01/2011 11:32:00 PackageID:1C1000D1 BootImageID:1C1000A5 PackageVer: PackagePath:\\SRVx\SMSPXEIMAGES$\WORKSTAT\OSD\WINPE_CUSTOM\ Mandatory:0 smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) Advertisement results: OfferId:1C120039 OfferTime:15/02/2011 08:47:00 PackageID:1C1000E0 BootImageID:1C1000A5 PackageVer: PackagePath:\\SRVx\SMSPXEIMAGES$\WORKSTAT\OSD\WINPE_CUSTOM\ Mandatory:0 smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) ProcessDatabaseReply: Found optional advertisement(s): 1C120039 smspxe 2/16/2011 5:30:58 PM 2572 (0x0A0C) Is this normal behaviour? If so, how should I implement unattended OSD with PXE in the production environment, where we have 1 central primary perent site and 5 primary child sites? Must we create a resource record of new computers in all sites when we do not know beforehand in which site the machine will be located while deploying? Why not use unknown computer support? Also, there is no such thing as unattended PXE -- somebody has to power on the system and tell it to boot from PXE. Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys Jason. Thanks for your reaction. Unknown computer support has the disadvantage, that only 1 TS can be used, and we (like to) have a couple of different TS-es for different kind of clients. With unattended PXE I meant ZT deployment with PXE. Changed this in the original post. Regards, StephanYou know you're an engineer when you have no life and can prove it mathematically
