SCCM IIS uses IP address of the client or the Netbios name for the communication?
Hi - I would like to know how the client communicates to and forth with PMP through IIS. Couple of servers I had seen that NetBIOS names are used (while reviewing IIS logs). In some cases IIS uses IP to RECEIVE policy requests and provide policies to CLIENT. What is the preference in this (IP 0r Hostname)? Some cases we had noticed that through IP it is getting failed and as a next step it was trying with HOSTANME. And that got successes. One scenario I have seen that there were two systems (only one is alive) with same IP and IIS is sending policy details to that client. However client is not able to receive that because of DNS resolution issue. This could reflect in some delays in policy assignment to the client. IS my understanding correct? If there are many duplicate records in DNS and AD then that will create the slowness and other issues to get site code assignment and receiving policies?? Thank You Anoop C Nair

Hi, The MP (IIS) is not sending any policies to the client. It's the client that pulls the information from the Management Point. It uses "normal" naming resolution when contacting the Management Point.Kent Agerlund | http://scug.dk/members/Agerlund/default.aspx | The Danish community for System Center products

Hi - Oops correct. It's my mistake. MP never send policy detaisl to client. It's client fetches the policies rom MP. Actually I was talking abt the GET function used in IIS. Some times it uses NEtBIOS name otherwise IP. So how the clients will download content and policies through IP or Hostname? And what is the preference? 2010-06-26 23:56:55 10.19.136.12 CCM_POST /ccm_system/request - 80 - 10.19.136.11 ccmhttp 200 0 0 397 2010-06-26 23:56:55 10.19.136.12 GET /SMS_MP/.sms_aut MPLIST 80 - 10.19.136.11 SMS+CCM 200 0 0 35 In the above examples, clients IP address is reclecting in the logs however in some cases we have noticed that it is NetBios Name? COuld you please let me know that in which scenario the hostname will refrect i the above example? And by anyways duplicate records in DNS impact SCCM clients getting policies?? Thanks Anoop C Nair

Hi - Thanks. Yes you are correct, so my question is: "why are the IIS logs showing an IP address or NetBIOS name from time to time?" And I have noticed that the client request policies through IP if it's giving 400 series errors and the client will try with NetBIOS name. Not sure, what is the reason behind this? Anoop C Nair

I don't know. My guess: the server where IIS is running on is not able to do a reverse lookup (ip -> name).
