I am also getting this issue.

It seems that when the Offline Servicing Manager gets an error from an update, all the rest of the updates after that error, will not apply to the image.

This is using a standard Windows 8 image (VL) that has had no previous modifications made to it, apart from the previous updates being applied by using the <right click> Schedule Updates wizard from within the SCCM 2012 SP1 console.

Hi San,

Checkout the following:

  • Did you have installed an antivirus solution on your site server? If so check you have configured exclusions specific for offline servicing.
  • Verify that the updates selected are CBS updates as for example KB2833958 is not (.Net Framework security update)
  • Verify that you have enough free space available on the C drive of the site server you are running this against?
  • Verify DISM logfile for additional info on trhoubleshooting your issue (C:\Windows\Logs\Dism\dism.log)

Thanks for Reply Ronny.

- SCEP is installed on SCCM Server and real time protection is off. It also have all exclusions that your link suggests.

- This could be the issue. If you can help me how to identify if that patch is CBS or not. Is there any easy indicator where we can find it is not CBS update.

- i got 50 GB free space. When i start offline servicing, it still have 27 GB free space hence i think free space is not issue. For the sake of others, if you can point me where we can change the offline servicing folder location?

- I will post logs when again in office

Sorry for the delayed response, non-CBS updates will disregarded during the offline servicing process so no worries about that. We're facing similar issues offline servicing default Windows 8 wim file. Some updates which seems suspicious are: KB2756872, KB2769165, KB2770917, KB2779768, KB2785094, KB2805227, KB2811660, KB2822241, KB2836988. Excluding those updates offline servicing will succeed without any problem. To exclude we removed SEP 12 but this behavior still occurs.

Applying those updates manually by DISM command-line works like a charm.

I suggest to perform the following procedure to fix this problem:

  • determine which software updates are failing during offline servicing proces
  • excluded the first software update which consequently fail each offline servicing cycle untill you succeed
  • delete the software updates from deployment package(s)
  • download again the software updates required by ADR
  • perform offline servicing cycle

The above steps takes a while but ends to get rid off 'corrupted' software updates (corrupted between quotes as the binaries are ok as they were succesfully applied using DIMS through commandline). Downloading the suspicious software updates again solved the issue for and we're able to perform offline servicing from scratch (default install.wim file). What strikes is the fact those suspicious software updates - as mentioned in my previous reply - will succesfully applied by adding them manually through

Having the same issue with out w8 wim. and some of the same patches causing this as you mention.

considering opening a MS support ticket on the issue to get their perspective on the problem. did you?

I had issues with the following updates:

  • KB2835361
  • KB2840632
  • KB2840633
  • KB2844289

I re-downloaded these updates and did a MD5 check, and the files were exactly the same, so I do not think they have been corrupted.

I seem to have found that I can patch the Windows 8 wim if I don't try to install all the updates at once, and if I tell it to not continue on error. At this point, I am still trying to find the best sequence in which patches should be applied so that they will succeed.

It is annoying that you cannot tell it to install all patches at once and have it work, or that SCCM cannot tell that certain patches should be installed first before other ones are.

Byron

FYI - I also found that if I wanted to install .NET 3.5 on a box using this image, I had to add it before I patched it, otherwise it could not find the required source files. I would think that this is because of some of the updates and changing the files it requires. This maybe only an issue if you work in a disconnected environment.
