SCCM 2012 R2 OSD Very slow at Driver package and config manager client stage still after KB2905002 has been applied

Hi,
Now that I've applied KB2905002 and updated client, boot images etc, my image process is a lot faster again for most of the task. HOWEVER, it is still very slow at Apply Driver Package and Set up windows and config manager client.

After that step has completed, everything is speedy again. It does not matter which computer model it is in the task, they are all slow at downloading - as in around 1 hour to download.

The step in the task is just a WMI query on that model computer.
Happens for Win 7 and Win 8.1.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Hi askzxy,

From expereince, I try to avoid using driver packages as the first option, as this increases the build time.

I always use Auto Apply Drivers First, Use Driver packages for the probelematic drivers that are not picked up by the auto apply drivers step.

KB2905002 only addressed an issue with downloading the image and has nothing to do with downloading any other content.

How big are your driver packages? Are you selectively running the apply driver packages tasks using conditionals on the tasks?

Have you reviewed smsts.log to see if there are any issues? Have you verified that these packages are coming from local DPs?

I disagree. I prefer using driver packages and I am avoiding the use of auto apply drivers.

Hi Torsten, Thanks for the constructive feedback, are you able to help us further as to why Auto Apply drivers should be avoided?

I tend to use both the auto apply driovers and pacakges , but i always make sure that the correct drivers are installed.

Hi All,

Here is a rundown of whats happening.

Before R2 update, everything was quick. No long download times for software packages, driver packages, boot images etc.

R2 applied, Slow package downloads no matter what it was.

KB2905002 applied, boot imaged updated, clients updated, boot image no longer slow to download, Operating system image no longer slow to download (bout 3 mins 3.5gb) and most software packages are speedy again.

BUT

I am still having trouble with the Apply Driver package and the client install during the task.

I ran a test this morning, it took about 45mins to download the hp elite 8300 driver package its 890mb. Then the newly created patched client install for KB2905002 (175mb) takes around 2-3 mins to download. This was NOT an issue before R2.

After the client has installed, and machine rebooted, most packages are speedy again.

Office 2013 (700mb) about 1 min, Windows live Essentials (131mb) less than 30 sec.

BUT then some packages are slow such as

Google Earth (187mb) 4 min, Adobe CS5 (10gb) 30 mins

I have looked through the smsts.log on the local machine during WINPE stage and have found nothing that stands out as an issue.

You can check logs here: http://sdrv.ms/1eJDscR

As for using driver package vs auto apply, I would rather use a driver package. Personal choice.

Driver packages are just WMI query to apply to correct model computer ( SELECT * FROM Win32_ComputerSystem WHERE Model LIKE '%HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF%' ).

Packages are all coming from right DP for the boundary set.

I am thinking for a test, to delete the HP Compaq Elite 8300 driver package from the DP and re-create.

Also note, its not just this driver package, its any of them.

Ultimately, there's no right or wrong answer to this question -- it's chaos vs. control.

Here's are a couple of great blogs about this topic to help you make an informed decision:

Have you excluded the contentlib on the DP from anti-virus?

Have you examined the iis.log and file system activity on the DP (using procmon or something similar) to see if it's a DP side issue?

How about the BITs configuration, Any special configurations that have been applied?
December 3rd, 2013 9:36am

nope nothing.

I have not changed anything from default BITs settings at all, before R2 or after R2 install.

I have opened a Support case with Microsoft. Lucky I had some free ones from my TechNet Subscription.....

Hi,

No still working with Microsoft on this one.

They have also just reported that some other users are having the same issue.

We are just putting up with it for the moment....

January 8th, 2014 7:13am

Same overhere before R2 TS was fast and we had no problems, after R2 boot slow and apply drivers very slow high CPU and bandwith.

After KB2905002 the PXE boot was normal but still the probelm exsists of slow applying drivers etc. so I've took the old boot images from before R2 and there were no problems at all.

Question wich boot images must i use the standard SCCM 2012 R2 ones or must i create new ones from the AD
